Vinicius Junior has agreed to remain at Real Madrid, ending Arsenal’s ambitious pursuit of the Brazil international after months of interest.
It felt like a pipe dream when news first broke. Now it is exactly that for the Gunners.
Arsenal’s pursuit of Vinicius Junior is over. The Brazilian forward has agreed terms to stay at Real Madrid.
Madrid are expected to confirm the deal before the week is out, following talks with Vinicius on Wednesday. The forward faced three choices: sign fresh terms at the Bernabéu, run down his contract and test free agency next summer, or take up Arsenal’s offer.
The decision itself, brings an end to an Arsenal pursuit that had become far more credible than it first appeared.
This was never just a case of Arsenal keeping tabs on an unsettled star. With the Gunners’ owners were ready to go all-in, making Vinicius their top target to bolster the attack after lifting the Premier League trophy.
Vinicius himself was open to a move to North London, had he chosen not to extend his stay in Spain.
That was the twist that made an unlikely transfer suddenly feel possible. With Vinicius heading into the final year of his 2023 contract, Madrid faced the real risk of losing a prized asset for nothing in 2027 if they couldn’t tie him down to new terms.
It’s no secret why Mikel Arteta was so keen, Vinicius has made 375 appearances for Madrid since arriving from Flamengo in 2018, scoring 128 goals and providing 100 assists. He has won La Liga three times and lifted the Champions League twice, scoring the winner against Liverpool in the 2022 final.
He added 22 goals in all competitions last season, continuing a run of five successive campaigns in which he has passed 20 goals for Madrid.
Arsenal’s attack already fired them to the title, but Vinicius would have raised the bar even higher. His pace and directness would have given Arteta another match-winner to pair with Bukayo Saka. And his Champions League pedigree showed he could deliver on the biggest nights, exactly where Arsenal want to make their mark.
The fact the Gunners could even consider this move said plenty about their new standing.
Not long ago, the idea of Arsenal going after one of Madrid’s stars would have sounded far-fetched. But as Premier League champions, with the resources and reputation to match, Arsenal were prepared to offer Club record transfer fees and wages to the Brazil international.
In the end, Madrid gave Vinicius enough reason to stay put.
His new deal should bring some stability to a squad that’s seen plenty of changes this summer. Vinicius remains at the heart of Madrid’s plans, not the headline exit.
With under a month left of the summer window, Arsenal have to decide what is next as the continue to strengthen their squad in an attempt to retain the Premier League title and continue to chase that ever-elusive Champions League trophy.
Christos Tzolis has already arrived to offer another option on the left, but chasing Vinicius showed Arteta was after more than just squad depth. He wanted another elite forward, someone who could make the difference in the biggest games right away.
The window of opportunity was open just long enough for Arsenal to show their ambition, but not long enough for the move to get close to reality. Vinicius stays in Madrid, and the most eye-catching transfer of Arsenal’s summer will be remembered as the one that slipped away.
