Zubimendi, by contrast, produced just one big chance during his first league season with Arsenal. Wharton then finished the campaign by producing a Man of the Match display in Crystal Palace’s UEFA Conference League final victory after setting up the winning goal.

Few midfielders move the ball through defensive lines as cleanly as Wharton. His 20.8% line-breaking pass percentage ranked first across Europe’s top five leagues last season, underlining his quality in possession. He spots forward passes early, stays calm under pressure and competes aggressively whenever possession changes hands. Chelsea would certainly become stronger with him. That doesn’t make a £100 million fee sensible.

Alonso already has Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia. competing for midfield places. Fernandez hasn’t completed a move away despite ongoing interest from Real Madrid, leaving Chelsea with plenty of quality in that area. Spending another nine-figure fee could easily create an expensive squad imbalance instead of fixing a genuine weakness.

Profit and Sustainability Rules remain another obstacle. Chelsea have posted heavy financial losses in recent seasons, making Palace’s asking price difficult to justify. Palace know Wharton’s reputation has grown enormously and appear to be using Declan Rice’s transfer as the benchmark. Chelsea should instead pursue a package worth around £65 million, plus £15 million in achievable bonuses spread across a seven-year contract.
