‘It’s a litmus test’: Prescott, Cowboys turn attention to joint practice with Rams

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott spoke with the media after Thursday's practice in Oxnard, California

OXNARD, Calif. (KLTV) - Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has not swayed from his Super Bowl aspirations as the team wraps up its second week in Oxnard, California, at training camp.

Prescott spoke with the media following Thursday’s practice. He said the offense isn’t where it needs to be right now.

“Some good things are happening. You know, when you’ve been in year one and you’re going into year two, you’re trying to build things, you’re trying to find new things and things that complement the old things that we do that we’ve done and do well. So I think we’re on pace to doing that. Is it where we want it to be? Absolutely not,” Prescott said. “I’m not going to say some of these moments, days and drills haven’t been frustrating, but at the same time, that’s what you want. That’s what camps about. We’re making the plays, the majority of the plays that are necessary to make. And so it’s a fun environment.”

While the focus has been on wide receivers like CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, tight ends Jake Ferguson and Brevyn Spann-Ford have had really good camps. Prescott said it’s the standard that the tight end group holds themselves to.

“They take a lot of pride in their job. Take a lot of job and the responsibility. And they’re always trying to communicate with the quarterbacks and myself and asking me why or you know, what can they do? And, you know, talking about complementing plays, those are the guys that want to run complementary routes of what they’ve done and always asking for more,” Prescott said. “Those are two guys that anytime I pretty much had the ball this offseason, they were there. And so that helps with the timing. That helps with the comfortability. And we’re just only going to grow now.”

Prescott said the thing that stands out most to him about the defense is the intensity.

“It’s just the collab effort of their intensity and their communication. It’s definitely felt when we’re just out there and we’re motioning and we’re making our calls and then post play, any time that they’ve made a play, they’ve celebrated. And deservingly so. And I just think that raises the energy of the whole team,” Prescott said. “We’ve just got to lock in and be sharper and fire back at them as we did today a little bit.”

Prescott said his relationship with Ryan Flournoy has grown because of his willingness to show up and learn.

“He’s a guy that you want on your team no matter what game you’re playing. His belief in himself, I think that’s where it starts. And you know, the moment he’s gotten his opportunity, he’s never looked back and not only never looked back, he’s looking to get more opportunities, to get more responsibility to do more for the team,” Prescott said. “He understands the role that he plays, and he’s just trying to make sure that he capitalizes on it every time, and he’s never satisfied. He’s a guy that I enjoy being around. He’s a guy that I’m super thankful to have as a teammate.”

Dak is part of the leadership council for the team, and although he’s the quarterback, he’s not necessarily the head of the leadership council.

“I’m going to speak up. I’m going to talk. I know what I know, and I’m not going to be hesitant to say it, but we need other guys to take to take that lead. And, you know, Kenny Clark, Rashan Gary and Tyler Smith have have been those guys to step up and they’re doing a hell of a job with the committee,” Prescott said. “It allows empowerment and understanding that we have a huge part in this accountability thing.”

The Cowboys will have a joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams beginning Tuesday and Prescott is calling this the first of three meetings with the Rams.

“It’s a litmus test. You know, it’s all you can ask for. CeeDee was just talking about today, looking forward to Tuesday and, looking forward to just us getting better understanding. One, this is a team that we’re going to play in the season. And it’s probably a team that, you know, we want to get to where we want to get to. We’re going to have to see them again,” Prescott said. “Call this probably what the first of three meetings. I assume if you know, everybody takes care of business. So it’s definitely going to be a test. It’s going to be fun. It’s going to be two great teams competing against each other.”
