How serious is Max Iheanachor’s injury?

Just as he was beginning his rapid ascent, Max Iheanachor, the Steelers’ first-round draft pick, may already face a curveball. The offensive tackle exited yesterday’s practice with what appears to be an upper body injury. Because Mike McCarthy speaks to the media before practice instead of after, there are as yet no updates.

Presumably, McCarthy will address Iheanachor before practice today. Because teams are not required to divulge much on the injury front at this period, however, he may not be overwhelmingly forthcoming. While the injury didn’t appear to be overly serious, the rookie is facing a critical time.

The Steelers drafted Max Iheanachor believing he will be a long-term starter for them in the future. After his strong showing since the Steelers started hitting in training camp, however, talk quickly shifted to him potentially starting as early as Week 1. That didn’t seem to be much of a discussion even just a few days ago. Everyone quickly started talking about it, but an injury of any note would be a major problem.

Because they have a couple tackles they can feel at least okay about, the Steelers have no pressing need to rush Max Iheanachor. Especially while dealing with an injury. If this issue stunts his growth, they still have Dylan Cook or even Broderick Jones. Iheanachor will be the starter sooner or later—it didn’t necessarily matter greatly which.

But fans are excited to see Iheanachor, especially following the rave reviews of recent days. They have been clamoring for the Steelers to invest in and develop the offensive line. As they appear to be approaching the finish line, the rookie first-round pick seems to be one of the finishing touches. It’s hard not to get excited when the potential is so obvious to see.

If Iheanachor is dealing with an injury that will cause him to miss serious practice time, even a preseason game or more, it will be very tough for him to start for the season opener. While Troy Fautanu was on track to do so—and started Week 2—he also had more college and high school experience. Iheanachor isn’t as raw as some feared, but he didn’t come is as the born technician Fautanu was. Most likely, he’ll still need some pretty good seasoning before they shove him out there. But they might dust off the tackle-eligible in the meantime just to get him involved.

The Steelers have a long road ahead of them under Mike McCarthy, along with his cadre of quarterbacks. With seven consecutive postseason losses, and no wins in nearly a decade, they are under fire for their repeated playoff failures. While we have seen many changes, none could dream of topping Mike Tomlin resigning.

We’re already into training camp, with free agency and the draft already reshaping rosters. The Steelers, of course, are used to early offseason mode as a team thatloses by the middle of January all the time. Enjoy the ride, even the turbulence, because it’s the only way we know how to travel anymore.
