Following reports Tottenham‘s Djed Spence had been offered to Liverpool, the chances of an Anfield move for the England full-back have been laid clear.

Spence has been touted for a switch to Liverpool for a number of weeks now, with many fans seeing him as the ideal addition to Andoni Iraola‘s full-back options.

Thursday brought claims that the 25-year-old – who qualifies as homegrown and can play at both left-back and right-back – had been offered to both Liverpool and Man United.

But talkSPORT’s Alex Crook and Ben Jacobs have since reported that Spence is not considered a target for Liverpool at this stage.

Jacobs wrote on X that the Reds are “not currently working on” a deal for Tottenham‘s No. 24 and are “are focused on other targets as it stands.”

Liverpool ‘assessing the market’ for new defender

There are hopes of Liverpool signing a new defender before the transfer deadline on September 1, with Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni, Jeremy Jacquet and Conor Bradley all currently injured.

It leaves Virgil van Dijk as the only fit senior centre-back, while Jeremie Frimpong is de facto first-choice right-back despite being viewed as more suitable in a utility role.

In an appearance on talkSPORT, The Athletic’s James Pearce explained that Liverpool are “certainly assessing their options in the market” but cast doubt over a move for a specialist full-back.

Speaking on YouTube earlier this week, journalist David Lynch claimed a defensive signing was “not the priority right now,” with Liverpool focusing on moves for Paris Saint-Germain wingers Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye.

Lynch added that a player capable of playing at both centre-back and right-back – using Gomez as the example – is the “kind of profile that [they] would be looking at” but any breakthrough would come “a little bit later.”

It is evident that Spence is exploring his options having seen Tottenham sign Andy Robertson and tie Pedro Porro down to a new long-term contract.

While a transfer to Liverpool would make sense, the reality may be that he is simply not seen as of the standard required – not least to potentially replace Bradley as first choice despite his injury woes.

A player being offered out almost always refers to the work of an agent, rather than a club itself, and while Anfield may be an ideal destination for Spence, the feeling is seemingly not reciprocated.
