Alexis Mac Allister ‘not pushing’ for exit: Only “mega bid” would tempt Liverpool

Alexis Mac Allister is expected to stay at Liverpool despite speculation over his future, with the midfielder showing no sign of pushing for the exit.

Mac Allister has been tipped for a summer exit amid reported interest from Real Madrid, having entered the final two years of his contract.

But speaking on talkSPORT, The Athletic’s James Pearce downplayed claims the No. 10 could be leaving Anfield.

“I think the speculation has come from the fact that they renewed Gravenberch’s contract, they just renewed Szoboszlai’s contract, and they haven’t done that with Mac Allister,” Pearce explained.

“He’s got two years left to run, so I think that’s kind of fuelled the idea, ‘OK, what does that mean, could he leave this summer?’.

“But at the moment, unless a mega bid came from somewhere and unless Alexis agitates and says he wants out – which, again, there’s been no indication – Iraola’s looking forward to working with him.”

Mac Allister is yet to report back for pre-season as he takes in a break following the World Cup, but the midfielder is due to return early next week – and likely Monday.

That could see talks held over his future and more clarity on his situation, but all signs point to the 27-year-old staying put.

His father and agent, Carlos Mac Allister, has repeatedly dismissed suggestions his son could leave, while Andoni Iraola has stressed his desire to keep him.

“I think Alexis has been one of the club’s best players in the past years,” the head coach said last month when asked about interest from LaLiga.

“He has had a very good World Cup and it’s normal that other clubs want our best players, our good players, it always happens in all the markets.

“But I want to keep my good players. Probably I’m looking forward more to signing new players than losing the ones we have here.”

Liverpool can’t risk losing Mac Allister on a free transfer

Liverpool will have a decision to make in the near future, however, given Mac Allister’s contract situation and the fact he turns 28 later this year.

But they have shown they are willing to allow players to enter the final year of their deals before making any call on whether to sell or negotiate an extension.

There is much debate over whether this is the right approach, particularly after seeing Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate leave for little-to-no return.

However, after a disappointing season last time out, the idea may be to see how Mac Allister responds in a new system and under a new head coach in Iraola before any judgment is made.
