Pre-season defeats can still provoke strong reactions inside the dressing room. Managers often welcome anger when it reflects high standards and a refusal to accept poor performances. Context around squad rotation and returning players helps frame the result without diminishing the need for improvement.
Friendly matches that feature large numbers of changes rarely produce fluent displays. Costly individual errors in the opening period can set a difficult tone. Positive moments mixed with clear shortcomings give coaches clear areas to address.
Mikel Arteta has revealed that Arsenal’s players were “very upset” and “fuming” during their 3-1 pre-season defeat by Real Betis. The Gunners conceded three times in a disjointed first half at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, with errors from Kepa Arrizabalaga and Kai Havertz proving costly.
Asked about the reaction in the dressing room after the difficult opening period, Arteta said: “Very upset, given a hard time. They are fuming, but this is good. That’s what we need.”
Despite the disappointment, the Arsenal manager placed the result in the context of a disrupted summer. A total of 25 players were used across the 90 minutes as the club continued to manage workloads for those returning from the World Cup.
“Well the important part is to win it and we didn’t manage to win it so disappointed obviously for the result. It’s true we used 25 players, so you need to give a bit of context to the game,” Arteta said.
“In the first half, with more starters, two very different things: how we played and how we competed, because we had some fantastic moments in the time we played. By the way, we competed especially in and around our box in a number of standards that we are used to so there are things to improve obviously, some positives to take from the game and then a bad result sometimes it’s good to create even more fire in the belly.”
New signing Christos Tzolis provided an assist for Piero Hincapie’s header. Arteta also confirmed that the knee injury suffered by youngster Louie Copley shortly after coming on “did not look good,” while again praising teenager Ceadach O’Neill for his maturity and quality.
Supporters will recognise the manager’s message. High standards demand strong reactions to poor performances, even in pre-season. Arsenal face Borussia Dortmund next and will look to respond with a more controlled display as preparations continue.
