Chelsea told to sign ex-Liverpool star after Sanchez criticism
Shay Given has urged Chelsea to consider a Caoimhin Kelleher transfer after questioning whether Robert Sanchez can provide the consistency required at Stamford Bridge.
The former Newcastle goalkeeper believes Kelleher would strengthen Xabi Alonso’s squad after establishing himself as Brentford’s number one.
Given has been impressed by Kelleher since the Republic of Ireland international left Liverpool for Brentford.
The 27-year-old made 37 Premier League appearances last season and Given believes both Chelsea and Newcastle could benefit from signing him. The Irish Sun reports that Given has specifically encouraged Chelsea to consider Kelleher this summer.
Given also questioned Sanchez’s tendency to follow outstanding saves with costly errors, despite stressing that he rates the Chelsea goalkeeper.

Why a Caoimhin Kelleher transfer looks unlikely for Chelsea
Given’s recommendation arrives at an interesting time because Chelsea appear to have reached a different conclusion internally.
ReadChelsea reported on Thursday that Chelsea have ruled out a move for Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa and are currently happy with their existing options.
The Blues are expected to give highly-rated Mike Penders an opportunity to compete with Sanchez rather than spend heavily on another established number one.
That makes Kelleher an intriguing suggestion rather than an active Chelsea target.
His first full Premier League season with Brentford demonstrated that he can handle regular top-flight football after spending much of his Liverpool career behind Alisson. Given believes his calmness would particularly appeal to clubs looking for greater security in goal.
Chelsea’s position could still change before the transfer window closes, particularly if Alonso becomes dissatisfied with his options during the final weeks of pre-season.
For now, however, there is no indication that Chelsea have approached Brentford over Kelleher.
Given has simply provided another name for the debate over whether Sanchez should remain Alonso’s first-choice goalkeeper.
