Chelsea are reportedly exploring a move for Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams as uncertainty continues to surround the future of Pedro Neto at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues are said to have identified Williams as a potential attacking addition ahead of the summer transfer window, with the club preparing for the possibility that Neto could leave west London. Fresh reports have claimed Manchester City are increasingly confident of completing a deal for the Portugal international, putting Chelsea on alert as they consider replacements.
Neto only joined Chelsea from Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer, arriving with a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most exciting wide players. However, despite showing flashes of his quality, speculation has emerged that Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are interested in bringing him to the Etihad Stadium as they look to strengthen their attacking options.
CHELSEA’s interest in Williams is understandable. The Athletic Bilbao star has established himself as one of Europe’s most dangerous wingers, combining explosive pace, direct running and impressive creativity from the left flank.
Williams played a key role in Spain’s successful European Championship campaign and has continued to attract attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. His ability to beat defenders one-on-one, create chances and operate in high-pressure matches makes him a profile that fits Chelsea’s long-term recruitment strategy.
The 23-year-old’s release clause at Athletic Bilbao has made him an attractive option for potential suitors, although competition for his signature is expected to be fierce. Chelsea would likely face interest from other leading European clubs if they decide to make a serious move.
Opinion: Losing Neto would be disappointing, but Williams would be a statement signing
Neto brings something that is difficult to coach: unpredictability. His acceleration, confidence in possession and willingness to take risks give Chelsea an attacking threat that can change games. Injuries have interrupted his consistency throughout his career, but there is little doubt that he has the talent to become a top-level Premier League performer.
Allowing him to depart so soon would feel frustrating, particularly because CHELSEA supporters have only seen glimpses of his best football.
However, if Neto does move on, Williams would represent an outstanding replacement. The Athletic Bilbao winger is younger, has proven himself on the international stage and possesses the kind of explosive ability that can transform an attack.
Williams would bring pace, creativity and a fearless mentality that suits Chelsea’s evolving squad. While replacing Neto would be difficult, signing Williams would soften the blow considerably and could even represent an upgrade in the long term.
