Liverpool may have been handed an unexpected opportunity in the transfer market.
According to @SebEcrivainFoot, the collapse of negotiations between Nottingham Forest and Sporting CP for Ousmane Diomande could work in Liverpool’s favour.
The 22-year-old Ivory Coast international is reportedly still available for around €40 million (£34.2 million) and remains a player the Reds have admired for some time as they continue their search for defensive reinforcements.
If true, Liverpool may now have the chance to move for one of Europe’s most highly rated young centre-backs.
A Long-Term Liverpool Target
Diomande is far from a new name for Liverpool supporters.
The Sporting defender has been linked with Anfield on several occasions over the past two transfer windows, with his combination of athleticism and technical quality making him an ideal fit for modern football.
At just 22 years old, he already possesses many of the attributes Liverpool look for in a central defender:
● Recovery pace
● Physical dominance
● Composure in possession
● Strong one-on-one defending
● Ability to defend high up the pitch
Those qualities have helped establish him as one of the most sought-after defenders in Portugal.
The Price Could Represent Value
The reported valuation of €40 million (£34.2 million) is likely to catch Liverpool’s attention.
In today’s transfer market, proven young centre-backs often command fees well in excess of £50 million.
If Sporting are genuinely prepared to sell for closer to £34 million, Liverpool could view Diomande as outstanding value.
That fee would also compare favourably with several other defenders linked with the club this summer.
Why He Fits Iraola’s System
One of the biggest reasons Diomande has remained on Liverpool’s radar is his suitability for Andoni Iraola’s style of football.
The Reds’ head coach wants defenders who are comfortable:
● Defending large spaces
● Pressing aggressively
● Playing out from the back
● Recovering quickly in transition
Diomande has consistently demonstrated those qualities during his time with Sporting.
His athletic profile and confidence in possession suggest he could adapt well to the demands of the Premier League.
Forest’s Loss Could Be Liverpool’s Gain
Nottingham Forest’s failure to complete a deal potentially changes the landscape.
Rather than entering a bidding war, Liverpool could now find themselves in a stronger position if they decide to act.
Of course, interest from other clubs is still possible, but one competitor appearing to drop out of the race can only improve Liverpool’s chances.
Centre-Back Still a Priority
Liverpool’s need for another central defender remains clear.
Joe Gomez continues to recover from injury, Jeremy Jacquet is still being managed carefully after missing several months of football, and Virgil van Dijk cannot carry the workload alone throughout a demanding campaign.
Adding another high-quality centre-back remains one of the club’s key priorities before the transfer window closes.
One to Watch
For now, there is no suggestion that Liverpool have submitted an offer.
However, the latest update suggests circumstances may be moving in their favour.
If Sporting are prepared to sell and Nottingham Forest have stepped aside, Liverpool could have the opportunity to sign a player they have admired for some time.
With the transfer window entering its decisive weeks, Ousmane Diomande is once again a name Liverpool supporters should be watching closely.
