What Pep Chavarria signing means for Chelsea and Jorrel Hato
Chelsea’s agreement to sign Pep Chavarria gives Xabi Alonso a very different option on the left and should not necessarily push Jorrel Hato down the pecking order.
Instead, the Pep Chavarria Chelsea role could allow Hato to spend more time in the positions where his versatility becomes most valuable.
Chelsea have agreed a package worth €19million plus €2m in add-ons with Rayo Vallecano, with Chavarria travelling to complete his medical and contract formalities.
ReadChelsea reported on Friday that Fabrizio Romano had given the transfer his “here we go”, finally bringing a long-running negotiation close to completion.
The temptation is to see another left-sided defender arriving and immediately question Hato’s minutes. The reality should be more interesting.

Chavarria offers Chelsea something relatively straightforward: an experienced, natural left-sided defender comfortable covering large distances.
Sky Sports’ profile of the Spaniard highlighted the intensity and mentality behind his rise through the Spanish leagues, while his former coaches spoke positively about his willingness to work and improve.
That profile suits a wing-back role particularly well.
Alonso can ask Chavarria to provide width, press aggressively and repeatedly travel up and down the flank without needing him to become the main architect of Chelsea’s build-up.
It is a different proposition to Hato.
Chelsea’s own assessment of the Dutch defender emphasises his comfort at both left-back and centre-back, his ability to carry possession and his experience stepping inside from the flank to create midfield overloads.
Those differences should allow Alonso to choose according to the game rather than establish a simple first-choice and reserve hierarchy.
Chavarria could actually free Jorrel Hato
Hato made 36 appearances and 25 starts during his first Chelsea season, operating at left-back and left centre-back in both two and three-man defensive structures. Chelsea also highlighted his comfort moving into midfield.
That flexibility is arguably more useful once Chelsea have a specialist beside him.
Without Chavarria, Hato risks becoming the automatic solution whenever Chelsea need someone on the left. With another established option available, Alonso can use the 20-year-old more selectively.
Against teams defending deep, Hato could start at left-back and invert into midfield.
Against stronger transition sides, Chavarria’s running power could provide a more conventional outlet while Hato moves inside as the left centre-back.
Alonso could even use both together in a back three, with Hato providing progression from the defensive line and Chavarria operating higher as the wing-back.
ReadChelsea previously analysed Hato’s position after his World Cup return, when the central question was whether Alonso would view him primarily as a centre-back or full-back.
Chavarria’s arrival may provide the answer: he does not need to be only one of them.
Chelsea finally have different left-sided solutions
Replacing Marc Cucurella was never simply about finding another left-back.
Chelsea lost a player capable of defending wide, moving inside, pressing aggressively and influencing possession higher up the pitch. Asking one young player to replicate every part of that role would have placed unnecessary pressure on Hato.
Chavarria changes the calculation.
At €21m including potential bonuses, Chelsea are not making another enormous investment that demands he starts every week. They are adding an experienced specialist who gives Alonso another tactical tool.
Hato can continue developing without Chelsea sacrificing immediate reliability.
That makes the Pep Chavarria Chelsea role particularly useful. The new signing does not have to replace Hato.
He can help Alonso get more out of him.
