Chelsea have reportedly moved to the front of the queue in the race to sign Arsenal midfielder Martín Zubimendi, with the Spain international’s future becoming the subject of fresh speculation following the Gunners’ pursuit of Bruno Guimarães.
Reports claim Chelsea are exploring a potential move for Zubimendi after Arsenal’s midfield plans appeared to shift with the expected arrival of Guimarães from Newcastle United. The Brazilian midfielder has been strongly linked with a switch to north London, with reports suggesting Arsenal are close to finalising a deal for the former Lyon star.
Zubimendi only joined Arsenal after establishing himself as one of Europe’s most highly regarded defensive midfielders during his time at Real Sociedad. The 27-year-old has been valued for his composure in possession, tactical awareness and ability to dictate the rhythm of matches from deep areas.
However, the arrival of another high-profile central midfielder could create questions over his role in Mikel Arteta’s squad. Arsenal have built one of the strongest midfield groups in the Premier League, with competition for places increasing as the club continues to strengthen its title-winning squad.
CHELSEA are now reportedly prepared to take advantage of any uncertainty, with manager Xabi Alonso said to be interested in bringing Zubimendi to Stamford Bridge. The midfielder previously worked under Alonso’s influence at Real Sociedad, where Alonso managed the club’s reserve side before moving into senior management.
The Blues have invested heavily in reshaping their squad and are looking to add further control and experience to their midfield department. Zubimendi’s ability to operate as a deep-lying playmaker is viewed as a potential fit for Chelsea’s tactical approach.
Despite the speculation, there has been no indication that Arsenal are actively looking to sell the midfielder, and any deal would likely require a significant financial commitment. Zubimendi signed a long-term contract after moving from Real Sociedad, giving Arsenal a strong negotiating position.
