Arsenal have seen an approach for Cristian Romero rejected by Tottenham as Mikel Arteta continues to assess defensive reinforcements.
The Arsenal move for Cristian Romero represents a significant progression from earlier interest, but Spurs have no intention of allowing their captain to cross north London.
The Gunners were linked with Romero last month, although at that stage there had been no indication of direct contact between Arsenal and Tottenham.
The Guardian reports that Tottenham have rejected an approach from Arsenal for Romero, with Spurs reluctant to sell the Argentina international to a Premier League rival.
Atlético Madrid currently appear far better positioned to secure his signature.
Atlético are in advanced discussions with Tottenham and are reportedly prepared to match Inter Milan’s £35million proposal.
Romero has also agreed personal terms with the Spanish club and is keen on the move, although Atlético may need to create room in their squad before completing a deal.
For Arsenal, Tottenham’s refusal creates an obvious obstacle regardless of the defender’s valuation.
Arteta’s interest is understandable.
William Saliba is expected to miss the opening weeks of the season with a back injury, leaving Arsenal assessing how best to cover one of their most important players.
