Arsenal centre-back transfer search reveals Mikel Arteta’s real concern
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal centre-back transfer plans have become clearer after the Gunners explored a move for Tottenham captain Cristian Romero.
Arsenal already have considerable defensive depth, but the players being targeted suggest Arteta is looking for something more specific as William Saliba continues his rehabilitation from a back injury.
Tottenham have refused to entertain Arsenal’s interest in Romero, with The Guardian reporting that Spurs are instead in discussions with Atlético Madrid.
The same report also names Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa as another player Arsenal have considered.
Taken alongside Arsenal’s previous defensive work this summer, there is a pattern developing. Arteta appears to want a senior defender who is comfortable on the right side and capable of stepping immediately into a title-winning team.
🚨 @JacobsBen: “Arsenal are looking to sign a left-sided attacker – really, they want two attackers, according to my information. Arsenal, between now & the end of the window, will look for that starting left-winger & then in addition, a more central attacker.”

Saliba’s absence is the obvious starting point.
The France international is expected to miss the opening period of Arsenal’s title defence after deciding against surgery on his back. ReadArsenal previously detailed the decision and the potentially lengthy recovery facing Saliba.
Cristhian Mosquera has already shown he can operate at right centre-back. Ben White can move centrally when required, while Jurriën Timber offers further flexibility once fully fit.
Yet Arsenal have continued looking elsewhere.
Sky Sports reported in July that Arsenal wanted to recruit another centre-back following Saliba’s injury, with Konsa and John Stones among the players considered.
Romero becoming part of that search reinforces the idea that Arteta does not simply want another squad defender. Arsenal appear to be looking for somebody trusted to play significant minutes immediately.
Romero is a very different proposition from signing a young defender who would require time to adjust.
The Argentina international knows the Premier League and has played regularly at the highest level. He is also accustomed to defending aggressively away from his own penalty area, an important demand within Arsenal’s approach.
Konsa offers similar immediate experience, while his ability to cover at right-back would give Arteta another solution on that side.
That versatility becomes particularly valuable when Arsenal’s existing options are considered.
Timber is returning following groin surgery, while White only recently returned from the knee problem which disrupted his previous campaign. Arsenal therefore have several possible solutions, but fewer players Arteta can currently expect to carry a heavy workload without qualification.
What another defender could mean for Hincapie and Mosquera
Signing another centre-back would not necessarily indicate a lack of faith in Mosquera.
The Spaniard remains the most obvious internal candidate to replace Saliba on the right. However, asking him to shoulder that responsibility for an extended spell would reduce Arsenal’s ability to rotate during a demanding opening run.
Piero Hincapie faces a different situation.
ReadArsenal analysed this week why Hincapie could receive a bigger role during Saliba’s absence, particularly because of the flexibility he gives Arteta across the left side of defence.
Adding Romero, Konsa or another right-sided option would allow Hincapie to remain primarily on his natural side rather than forcing Arsenal to reshuffle several positions whenever Saliba is unavailable.
That may ultimately explain Arsenal’s persistence.
Arteta already has numbers in defence. What Arsenal currently lack is certainty over how much they can demand from every available option during Saliba’s recovery.
The Arsenal centre-back transfer search increasingly looks designed to solve that problem rather than simply increase the size of the squad.
