Mike McCarthy sure does like the assistant coaching staff he’s assembled. Tom Arth was the rare assistant coach McCarthy held on to while coming to Pittsburgh. McCarthy remarked Friday that he thought Arth had the potential to become a head coach in the future.
However, Arth isn’t the only assistant McCarthy praised during Friday’s press conference. He also had a lot of love for receivers coach Adam Henry.
“Number one, Doctor Adam. He’s someone that everybody is very fond of. Just has a great way with people. Great people skills. Excellent teacher. Someone that I’ll rely on clearly when we get to the game planning in the passing game because I really like his vision, how he views the game how it needs to be played. So he’s an excellent asset… Adam Henry is an outstanding football coach, and I think his consistency is exactly what our players needed,” McCarthy said via a team-provided transcript.
There are a couple reasons Henry was an easy choice for McCarthy. For one, the two worked together in Dallas during the early portion of McCarthy’s tenure there. But aside from that, Adam Henry has coached more than his fair share of terrific receivers.
He worked with Anquan Boldin in San Francisco. He then moved to New York, where he helped Odell Beckham Jr. blossom after previously coaching him at LSU. He’d next work with Beckham again and Jarvis Landry in Cleveland.
Henry of course coached in Dallas, then moved to his most recent stop where he coached Stefon Diggs in Buffalo. And if you want to go way back into his resume, he even helped Zach Miller become a Pro Bowler as a tight ends coach for the Oakland Raiders.
Point being, Henry knows how to get players to produce from a receiving standpoint. Which is something the Steelers have desperately needed. Roman Wilson is looking to bounce back after two disappointing years to start his career. And the Steelers just spent a second-round pick, which they traded up for, on Germie Bernard. Developing him is pretty high on the list of priorities for 2026.
So far, Henry likes what he’s seeing from Bernard, and the speed with which he’s learning the offense. While we’re still at the very early stages of what will be a long season, Roman Wilson has been one of the most impressive players at camp as well. There’s a long way to go, but Henry is connecting with his receivers so far.
It’s a talented, and unique room he’s working with. DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. are a better starting duo than the Steelers have had in a while. If Adam Henry can continue to develop Wilson and Bernard behind them, this position could actually be dangerous for the first time in a while. So far, McCarthy loves what he sees from his new receivers coach.
