Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool now 'leading race' to sign exciting star, they're in talks with him…

via Reuters

Fabrizio Romano has dropped a huge update on Liverpool's interest in Paris Saint-Germain attacker Ibrahim Mbaye and confirmed on the latest episode of GIVEMESPORT's Market Madness that the club are in talks with his agent.

The Reds haven't been half as busy as they were last summer when they spent a whopping £446 million. They have made just two signings thus far, with Spanish winger Victor Munoz arriving from Osasuna for £35m, and teenage Austrian centre-back Ifeanyi Ndukwe joining from Austria Wien for £2.6m.

A marquee attacker has been expected to join Andoni Iraola's Merseyside outfit following Mohamed Salah's departure earlier this summer. While they are pursuing a deal for PSG's Bradley Barcola, they are also looking to sign his teammate.

Romano appeared on GIVEMESPORT's Market Madness podcast and delved into Liverpool's interest in Mbaye. He suggested that the Premier League giants have leapfrogged a Bundesliga club in the race for the teenage forward:

Mbaye is only 18 and is tipped to be a future superstar, having risen through the youth ranks at PSG and becoming the club's youngest-ever debutant back in August 2024. He has since made over 30 appearances at senior level for Luis Enrique's Parisians.

GIVEMESPORT sources understand that Mbaye is open to joining Liverpool to secure more game time. While the Reds have yet to make an offer for the player, a potential deal for the Senegalese starlet could cost upwards of €50 million (£42.8m).

The Merseysiders may well have seen an opportunity to swoop for the right-winger amid their attempts to sign Barcola. Reports claim that a £110m deal has been agreed with PSG for the French winger.

This summer transfer window has largely been one with the future in mind for the Anfield chiefs. Munoz is only 23 and is expected to compete for a starting berth on the left wing of Iraola's attack.

Jeremy Jacquet has officially arrived after the club agreed on a £60m deal with Rennes for the 21-year-old back in January. He'll be pushing for a starting role in defence and, given his age, looks set to be a permanent fixture in central defence for years to come.

Mbaye is another young prospect whom the Reds clearly see a lot of potential in and believe he could be their starting right winger. His chances of earning a starting role could depend on a battle with Rio Ngumoha and Munoz.

That said, the teenager might want assurances about game time if making the switch, given comments made by his father. French journalist Romain Molina claims that he asked why his son hadn't been given more first-team opportunities (via GetFootballNewsFrance):

Mbaye could be used in domestic cup competitions to help Iraola rotate his squad ahead of his first season in charge. He'll be looking to propel Liverpool back into the Premier League title picture, and adding another young attacker to his list of attacking options could be hugely beneficial, especially if a situation such as Ekitike's injury last season were to unfold.
