Xabi Alonso at Chelsea outlines plan to ‘compete anywhere’
Xabi Alonso has outlined the mentality he wants to build at Chelsea, insisting strong relationships within the squad will be crucial if the Blues are to compete for major honours.
Xabi Alonso at Chelsea has placed significant emphasis on togetherness during pre-season as his side prepare for the start of the Premier League campaign.
Chelsea have spent recent weeks travelling through Australia and Asia, giving Alonso an extended period to work with his squad both on and off the training pitch.
Speaking ahead of the Blues’ pre-season meeting with AC Milan in Jakarta, Alonso told Chelsea’s official website that developing trust between his players is central to creating a winning environment.
The Spaniard wants Chelsea to develop the mentality required to “compete anywhere”, stressing that the psychological side of the game carries similar importance to tactical preparation.

Alonso has enjoyed significant time with his players during Chelsea’s tour, which has included matches in Sydney and Hong Kong before the squad travelled to Indonesia.
The Chelsea head coach believes relationships built away from competitive matches can become particularly valuable when the pressure increases during the season.
“The strength of the team is the most important,” Alonso said.
His comments offer another indication of the culture he is trying to establish after taking charge at Stamford Bridge this summer.
Chelsea’s new signings are also beginning to settle into the group. ReadChelsea reported on Friday that Marco Palestra has already praised the freedom Alonso’s coaching staff are giving him, with the Italian quickly adjusting to his new surroundings.
Alonso now has to turn those positive early impressions into results.
Chelsea begin their Premier League season away at Fulham later this month, and the remaining pre-season fixtures will provide another opportunity to establish the standards their new manager expects.
There has been significant change at Stamford Bridge during the summer. Alonso’s message, however, is increasingly consistent.
Talent will be important, but the Xabi Alonso at Chelsea project is also being built around trust, personality and a collective mentality capable of surviving difficult moments.
