Liverpool defender set to sign new deal

Liverpool defender is expected to sign a new contract with the club.

Liverpool could be set to reignite their summer transfer business after a lengthy pause in activity. The Reds moved quickly to complete the signings of Jeremy Jacquet, whose transfer was agreed in February, and Victor Munoz earlier this summer.

However, that quiet spell could soon come to an end, with fresh developments emerging in their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain winger Ibrahim Mbaye.

Liverpool also remain interested in Mbaye’s team-mate Bradley Barcola. There has also been fresh speculation surrounding Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa as Andoni Iraola continues to reshape his backline.

Those plans are still expected to include Giovanni Leoni, a player the Liverpool head coach has admired for some time.

Meanwhile, the Liverpool Echo reports that Luke Chambers has attracted loan interest from several clubs, including Blackburn, after impressing during Liverpool’s pre-season campaign.

A decision on the England youth international’s immediate future is expected later in the transfer window. Chambers is likely to sign a new contract with Liverpool before completing a temporary move.

Chambers featured in all three of Liverpool’s pre-season matches in the United States, starting the final two against Wrexham and Leeds United after coming off the bench against Sunderland.

Although naturally a left-back, the 22-year-old filled in at centre-back due to Liverpool’s injury problems and scored the opening goal in the 4-2 defeat to Leeds in Chicago.

The defender spent the second half of last season on loan at Charlton Athletic, where he played a key role in helping the Addicks avoid Championship relegation.

His recent performances have attracted interest from several clubs, including Championship side Queens Park Rangers and at least one overseas team.

Chambers also earned praise from Andoni Iraola after impressing at centre-back against Wrexham. “Luke Chambers played there. He is not a centre-back, but he played really, really well,” Iraola said.

A Liverpool academy graduate since the age of six, Chambers made his senior debut in the League Cup in September 2023 before going on to make three Europa League appearances that season, including two starts. He has also enjoyed previous loan spells with Kilmarnock and Wigan Athletic.
