When fully healthy, Malik Nabers is the unquestioned leader of the New York Giants' wide receiver room. But as John Harbaugh steps in as head coach, he is trying to find the perfect running mate opposite him.

The Giants selected Malachi Fields in the third-round of the 2026 NFL Draft with hopes he could fill that role. Early on in training camp, the rookie has begun separating himself from the pack, via Dan Duggan of the Athletic.

“Fields has demonstrated an ability to make plays downfield, which could be his primary role as a rookie. Unlike Jalin Hyatt, whose speed made him a deep threat exclusively, the 6-foot-4, 222-pound Fields has the size to run underneath routes and use his physicality to make contested catches,” Duggan wrote. “With the Giants expected to lean heavily on two-tight end packages, Fields has made an early claim for the No. 2 receiver spot opposite Nabers.”

Throughout training camp and the preseason, Fields will be looking to further prove he is the right man for the job. New York has a litany of wide receivers who will be searching for targets outside of Nabers. But if Fields continues his hot streak, quarterback Jaxson Dart will be looking his way early and often.

Harbaugh still has to work the kinks out of his new offense. For all his experience, starting over in a new place may take some time. But now he has a dynamic receiver to work with in Fields. There's a chance he becomes a crucial contributor early on in his rookie year.
