Arsenal have reportedly made another attempt to prise Cristian Romero away from Tottenham Hotspur as Mikel Arteta continues his search for defensive reinforcements.
The Gunners have been heavily linked with the Argentina international throughout the summer, and fresh reports suggest they have renewed their efforts despite Tottenham’s firm stance.
According to Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, Arsenal’s interest in Romero remains genuine as the race for the World Cup-winning defender intensifies.
However, Arsenal are not alone.
Edul reports that Atletico Madrid are currently the most active club pursuing Romero after generating fresh funds through player sales, while Inter Milan already have an agreement in place with Tottenham over the framework of a potential transfer.
The remaining obstacle for Inter is reaching personal terms with the defender.
Meanwhile, a separate report claims Arsenal returned with another approach on Friday and are prepared to outbid both Atletico Madrid and Inter in an effort to land one of Europe’s most highly regarded centre-backs.
Tottenham, however, are continuing to reject advances.
Romero has long been regarded as one of the Premier League’s standout defenders.
Former Spurs team-mate Micky van de Ven previously described the Argentine as “world-class”, while his performances for both club and country have cemented his reputation among Europe’s elite centre-backs.
The 28-year-old also played a key role in Argentina’s World Cup triumph in 2022 and remains one of the first names on Lionel Scaloni’s team sheet.
Arsenal’s interest is understandable given their current defensive situation.
William Saliba is facing a spell on the sidelines with a back injury, leaving Arteta keen to strengthen the heart of his defence before the transfer window closes.
The Premier League champions have already reinforced several areas of the squad this summer, including completing a deal for Bruno Guimaraes, but adding another elite central defender remains a priority.
Romero would undoubtedly represent a statement signing.
Inter have already agreed a deal with Tottenham worth around £34.2 million for Romero, according to earlier reports, but Arsenal are expected to have to pay considerably more given Spurs’ reluctance to sell to a domestic rival.
Whether Arsenal can convince Tottenham to soften their position remains uncertain.
For now, the north London club appear determined to keep testing their rivals’ resolve as Arteta looks to assemble a squad capable of defending the Premier League title and challenging for Champions League glory.
With Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan also pushing for Romero’s signature, the battle for one of Europe’s most accomplished defenders is showing no signs of slowing down.
