Newcastle eye former Tottenham midfielder as shock target amid Bruno Guimaraes sale

Newcastle are interested in signing ex-Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, talkSPORT understands.

Hojbjerg is viewed as a budget option that will add experience to the squad as Bruno Guimaraes nears a switch to Arsenal.

Hojbjerg could potentially be a replacement for Guimaraes at Newcastle

Captain Guimaraes is set to depart the Magpies and join the Gunners after a £75million deal was finally agreed.

He will follow Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon out the door, while manager Eddie Howe also resigned from his post.

Matthias Jaissle has replaced Howe in the dugout, with this summer becoming one of major change for Newcastle.

And to make up for the loss of some of their key stars and boss, they're going to need some renewed leadership.

Eyeing experience

Hojbjerg could be their chosen man, with the former Spurs player said to be available for around £10m to 15m.

The 31-year-old midfielder played 43 games for Marseille last season, scoring five goals and assisting another five.

But it's his Premier League experience that Newcastle will be attracted to most.

Hojbjerg has played 254 top-flight games in his career - last playing in England for Tottenham in the 2023/24 campaign.

He played 145 times for Spurs in the Premier League during his four-year stay, while also featuring 109 times for Southampton between 2016-2020.

In total, the Denmark international has completed eight seasons in the league, so he won't be unfamiliar should he return.

Guimaraes latest

Guimaraes has not been confirmed to have left for Arsenal yet, but it's understood that the Brazilian is set to be announced imminently.

Mikel Arteta identified him as a priority target this summer, and after a long saga, the deal has now been agreed.

The 28-year-old left Newcastle's training camp earlier this week to undergo a medical ahead of the move.

He will become Arsenal's fourth summer signing, following Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier through the door.

Piero Hincapie also made his loan from last season permanent.

As for Newcastle, they're going to have more cash to splash once Guimaraes eventually leaves the club.

Hojbjerg is a target to use up to £15m on, while they have already spent nearly £150m on signings in the window.

Bazoumana Toure joined from Hoffenheim for £43m, with Aladji Bamba signing for £34m and Lucas Hornicek for £25.7m.

Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen also joined for a combined £41m.
