Aston Villa work on defender deal as Premier League rivals eye star

Villa are working to complete a move for Atletico Madrid left-back Matteo Ruggeri as they wait on a potential new bid from Arsenal for Ezri Konsa.

Ruggeri has emerged as the most likely left-back signing after efforts to sign Pervis Estupinan from AC Milan stalled last month.

A deal with Atletico is thought to be close, though Ruggeri himself still needs to agree to the move.

The 24-year-old will provide competition for Ian Maatsen in Villa’s squad, with the departure of Lucas Digne to Paris Saint-Germain expected to be confirmed early next week.

Villa, meanwhile, are waiting to see whether Arsenal will make another approach for Konsa.

The Gunners enquired about the England international earlier in the summer, with the clubs thought to be some distance apart in terms of valuation. Liverpool are also thought to be keeping tabs on the 28-year-old.

Konsa’s future is likely to become clearer when he reports back to Bodymoor Heath next week, having been granted a break following the World Cup.

Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez, both of whom have also been the subject of interest from other clubs, are also due to return with Emery having his full squad together for the first time ahead of Wednesday’s European Super Cup meeting with Paris Saint-Germain.

Villa then head to Germany next weekend to play Borussia Monchengladbach in their final friendly before the new Premier League season.
