A new midfielder had not been on the agenda this summer given that Hansi Flick had been happy with his options, but given that the 2026 World Cup Golden Ball winner would represent a market opportunity, a move was ultimately made.
Rodri would be a significant upgrade on Barcelona’s midfield options, and it would allow Marc Casado to depart as a way of recouping some of the money spent on the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner. However, it could also provide an opening for an extra player to arrive, which may be essential given Frenkie de Jong’s injury woes.
And it could be well-known name that Barcelona opt for. As per [Sport](https://www.sport.es/es/noticias/barca/entorno-bergvall-vuelve-llamar-barca-133173828), Lucas Bergvall has been offered to the Catalan club, with the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder desperate to leave after dropping down the pecking order in North London.
Back in January 2024, Barcelona were in advanced talks with Djurgardens over a deal for Bergvall. A deal was believed to be imminent, but at the 11th hour, the 20-year-old pulled the plug in favour of going to Spurs, where he has played relatively regularly over the last two seasons.
Barcelona’s stance on Bergvall is clear: he’s not a player that they are interested in signing. Despite being available for the relatively affordable price of €60m, sporting director Deco is clear that a move is someone that is not being considered at this stage.
It would make no sense for Barcelona to go for Bergvall if they ended up signing Rodri. Flick would have the Man City man alongside Pedri, de Jong, Gavi and Marc Bernal, while Eric Garcia can also fill in when required. Thus, there is simply no need for the Sweden international to be sought.
