Liverpool tipped to sell"consistently poor"£250k-a-week player

Michael Owen has urged Liverpool to sell Cody Gakpo this summer after he underperformed massively in the 2025/26 season, after which Arne Slot was sacked.

While Liverpool have not officially made Gakpo available for sale, reports have indicated that a “huge sum” could change their stance, with a £72m floated as a likely number they would engage a deal with Spurs.

The Dutchman is reportedly open to joining Tottenham, so if Liverpool agreed on a fee with Spurs, then a deal would proceed.

Fabrizio Romano reported on Wednesday that “Tottenham are in direct talks with Cody Gakpo’s camp over a possible move this summer.”

Michael Owen tips Liverpool to sell Cody Gakpo after “consistently poor” season

Owen believes that Liverpool should sell Gakpo this summer if they sign a left winger like Bradley Barcola to replace him.

“Well, Gakpo was consistent last year, but consistently poor,” he told Goal. “He had a good opening 10 games or something, but then for the rest of the season, he was pretty poor.

“Gakpo has already proven that he can be very effective in the Liverpool team, but it was a concern, his performances last season.

“It was a poor season. I don’t think [Gakpo leaving is] an impossible one. I just think Liverpool are probably… if they lose him, they’re already desperate for wide men.

“If they lose him, are you going into the season relying on Rio Ngumoha? If you’ve got a replacement, then I can see it.

“It could happen. At the moment, I think they’re looking at adding; I’m not sure they’re thinking of getting rid of too many players.

“His season last year was not very good. However, he has proven over time that he is very good. That’s an up in the air one.”

I don’t mind if Liverpool sell Gakpo, but I am interested to see if Andoni Iraola can get the best out of him

I may be alone in this, but I do think Cody Gakpo will improve under Andoni Iraola.

The main sticking point, however, is that if Liverpool complete a deal to sign Barcola as many expect, then is there any sense in keeping a player earning £250,ooo per week? I don’t think so.

That said, he is a brilliant player to have in reserve, with the complaint last season being that Gakpo is not good enough to be the starting left winger at Liverpool.
