Surprise!
Arsenal have completed the signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United in a deal worth a reported £75 million, with around £7 million of the fee due to his former club Lyon.
The Brazil international arrives at the Emirates after four-and-a-half hugely successful years on Tyneside, where he became one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders. Elevated to cult hero status almost from the moment he walked through the door, he captained Newcastle to League Cup glory in 2025, becoming the first Magpies skipper to lift a major domestic trophy in 70 years.
In total, he made 195 appearances for the St James’ Park outfit, scoring 31 goals and providing 32 assists, numbers that only tell part of the story. His energy, aggression ability to lure players into headbutting his elbow and willingness to dictate the tempo of a game made him the heartbeat of Eddie Howe’s midfield.
His reputation has grown on the international stage too. Since making his Brazil debut in 2020, Guimaraes has established himself as a regular for his country and started all five matches at this summer’s World Cup, contributing four assists. He’ll also arrive in north London to plenty of familiar faces, having shared a dressing room with Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus on international duty.
At 28, Arsenal are signing Guimaraes at the peak of his career. Unlike many big-money arrivals, there should be very little adaptation period. He knows the Premier League inside out and looks every inch a plug-and-play addition to Mikel Arteta’s midfield. He will wear the number 39 shirt.
It will be fascinating to see exactly how Arteta uses him. Arsenal already boast an enviable collection of central midfielders in Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and the increasingly versatile Myles Lewis-Skelly. But after Rice and Zubimendi shouldered an enormous workload during last season’s title-winning campaign, adding another top-class option feels less like a luxury and more like sensible squad building.
Reflecting on the deal, Sporting Director, Andrea Berta said: “We are delighted to welcome Bruno Guimaraes to our club.
“Bruno is a player with a great mentality and great quality, who will bring strong leadership to our squad.
“With Bruno joining us, we are further strengthening the heart of our team. As we have all seen, Bruno can play as a defensive midfielder and as a box-to-box player. He combines quality with quantity, and has provided goals and assists for his team every year.
“Bruno will allow Mikel to further develop our playing style and will also increase our internal competitiveness, which is essential for maintaining the standards required when we are aiming to win major trophies.”
Arsenal welcome Borussia Dortmund to the Emirates on Sunday for the Emirates Cup, and while a presentation to the supporters feels almost inevitable, an appearance on the pitch seems less likely given how recently the transfer was completed. With Como visiting N5 next Wednesday and the Community Shield against Manchester City in Cardiff the following weekend, however, it shouldn’t be long before we see Guimaraes pulling on the red and white for the first time.
