João Pedro has welcomed Chelsea’s reported signing of Danny Welbeck, describing the veteran striker as one of the most influential figures in his career and backing him to make an immediate impact both on and off the pitch at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking about his former Brighton & Hove Albion teammate, Pedro said Welbeck has been a “very important person” in his life, highlighting the guidance and support he received from the experienced forward during their time together on the south coast.
The Brazilian believes Welbeck’s leadership qualities will be just as valuable as his performances on the pitch, particularly for CHELSEA’s young squad as they continue to build under their current project.
‘Personally, Danny is a very important person for me in life,’ Pedro told Chelsea’s official website from the club’s pre-season training camp.
‘When I came to England, I didn’t speak English, but he always tried to be around me to support me and help me develop. This will now be the third time that we have played together and I think, as he did with me in the past, he will give support to everyone in the squad.
‘Danny is this guy; he is very helpful and wants the best for everyone around him and for the team.
‘Everyone knows that he is a top player. I’m looking forward to playing alongside him again and I think he will be a very good person to have in the group.’
Beyond his leadership credentials, Welbeck would also provide valuable depth in attacking positions, offering Chelsea another experienced option capable of playing centrally or in wider roles.
Will Welbeck add goals to Chelsea attack?
His goalscoring record deserves greater attention. Welbeck scored 13 Premier League goals for Brighton last season, the best league return of his career. That suggests this is not simply a sentimental signing or a move designed to provide dressing-room leadership. He can still contribute in front of goal.
For CHELSEA, his biggest contribution could come from his ability to complement younger forwards rather than simply replace them. Welbeck’s movement, physicality and willingness to work could give Xabi Alonso another option when games become difficult.
He can occupy defenders, bring teammates into play and provide a reliable focal point when Chelsea need to play more directly
