Louie Copley has confirmed he suffered a ruptured ACL during Arsenal’s pre-season defeat against Real Betis, bringing an abrupt halt to an encouraging summer with Mikel Arteta’s first team.
The 19-year-old was making only his second senior appearance when he suffered the injury nine minutes after coming on as a substitute.
Copley later confirmed the diagnosis on social media and vowed to return stronger, with several senior Arsenal players publicly showing their support.

The setback comes just as Copley had started to earn meaningful opportunities around Arteta’s squad.
He made his first-team debut earlier in pre-season against Girona before appearing again against Betis. ReadArsenal had previously highlighted Copley among the academy players taken into Arsenal’s senior pre-season group in Spain.
His progress followed a loan spell with Crawley Town during the second half of last season, where he made nine League Two appearances.
Arteta had already expressed concern immediately after the Betis game because of the way Copley sustained the injury. Those fears have now been confirmed.
talkSPORT reports that Copley announced he had ruptured his ACL, with Declan Rice, Ben White, Jurriën Timber, Max Dowman and Tommy Setford among those responding publicly to his message.
The timing is particularly cruel.
Copley had already made an impression during Arsenal’s summer programme and was beginning to experience senior football after progressing through the academy.
His attention will now turn towards rehabilitation rather than pushing for further first-team minutes.
No precise return date has been announced, but an ACL rupture is likely to keep Copley sidelined for a significant period.
For Arsenal, the priority will be giving the youngster the time and support required to complete his recovery properly.
