Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal could give Mikel Arteta something he badly needed last season: the freedom to manage Declan Rice’s workload without weakening his midfield.
The Brazilian is closing in on a £75million move from Newcastle United after completing his medical and signing his contract.
ReadArsenal reported on Thursday that Guimaraes had passed his medical ahead of the move, before Friday’s update revealed that the Newcastle captain had also signed his Arsenal contract.
Once confirmed, Arteta will have a major decision over how to fit Guimaraes alongside Rice and Martin Zubimendi.

Rice carried an enormous workload during Arsenal’s title-winning campaign and the World Cup.
The England midfielder made 69 appearances for club and country across the season, with fatigue becoming increasingly apparent towards the end of the summer.
Guimaraes gives Arteta the opportunity to change that.
The Independent’s tactical assessment of the £75m signing highlights his ability to operate either at the base of midfield or further forward.
That versatility gives Arsenal several combinations without asking Rice to start virtually every important fixture.
Zubimendi can remain the deepest midfielder with Rice and Guimaraes operating higher. Alternatively, Guimaraes can drop into the deeper role when Rice is rested or pushed forward.
There is also a strong argument for playing Rice and Guimaraes together during Arsenal’s biggest matches.
Both cover ground aggressively and recover possession, but their qualities on the ball differ enough to prevent the partnership becoming repetitive.
Rice is at his most destructive when he can carry possession forward and attack space from the left side.
Guimaraes offers more incision through central areas.
Arsenal add another elite duel winner
Arteta has repeatedly placed importance on winning individual battles, and Guimaraes arrives with numbers that fit that approach.
Opta Analyst found that Guimaraes won 6.1 duels per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season, a better rate than any of Arsenal’s central midfielders.
He also averaged 1.6 tackles per 90, while only Rice produced more recoveries among Arsenal’s midfield options.
Guimaraes has become increasingly influential further forward too.
He recorded nine Premier League goals and five assists last season, his best attacking return at Newcastle, while his touch map showed increasing involvement in the inside-right channel.
That could complement Rice particularly well.
Rice has increasingly developed into a powerful left-sided No.8 under Arteta. Using Guimaraes from the opposite side could give Arsenal two midfielders capable of winning possession high up the pitch before immediately driving attacks forward.
It would also reduce the reliance on Rice to provide virtually every physical solution in midfield.
Zubimendi remains important because his control and positioning provide something different. Arteta does not need to select the same combination every week.
That may be the biggest benefit of spending £75m on another midfielder.
Arsenal are not merely adding depth. They are giving Arteta the flexibility to use Rice more selectively while still fielding a midfield capable of matching the intensity required to defend their Premier League title.
After Rice’s exhausting 2025/26 campaign, that could prove just as valuable as anything Guimaraes provides individually.
