Former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has already given a glowing summary of Ronald Araujo as he nears a switch to Anfield. The Reds have moved for the Barcelona star to help address their concerns in defence.
Araujo is close to completing a loan move from Barcelona to help bolster Liverpool’s ranks. The Reds require defensive reinforcements, with captain Virgil van Dijk currently the only fit centre-back in Andoni Iraola’s squad.
Araujo is primarily a central defender but can also be deployed as a right-back, easing concerns about two positions. The ECHO understands that the loan deal includes an option to buy, with the defender set to undergo a medical on Sunday.
The 27-year-old was part of Uruguay’s squad at the World Cup this summer, though he remained sidelined due to a calf issue. Former Liverpool star Nunez has a long-standing friendship with Araujo and previously described his standout qualities.

"Ronald, well, he's been my friend for a long time,” Nunez told AUFTV in May 2025. “He's a very humble person, he comes from the same background as me, he also has the same characteristics as me, we both come from towns that are very far from the city of Montevideo.”
Aside from their friendship, Nunez named three traits that summed up Araujo’s character: “This is a humble person, a cheerful person, a family man and a good friend."
Nunez would likely approve of Liverpool pursuing a move for Araujo. The striker also showed his affection for the defender in 2022, when Araujo’s hopes of competing at the World Cup were in doubt.

The Barcelona centre-back had sustained a thigh injury, which required surgery, a few months before the tournament. Ahead of a friendly against Canada in September 2022, Nunez held up a Uruguay shirt sporting Araujo’s name to remind him that he remained in his and the squad’s thoughts.
Much like this summer’s tournament, Araujo was fit enough to be included in Uruguay’s World Cup squad almost four years ago. However, he failed to feature before his country were knocked out in the group stages.
Araujo became Barcelona club captain in January after experienced goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen left on loan. He helped lead the Catalan giants to the La Liga title, making 24 league appearances.
The versatile defender has spent the majority of his career with the club, initially joining Barcelona B after arriving from Uruguayan side Boston River in 2018. Araujo has clocked up 213 appearances for Barcelona, winning three La Liga titles and twice lifting the Copa del Rey.
