Arsenal midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has made clear that the opportunity to compete for major honours was central to his decision to join the Premier League champions from Newcastle United.
The Brazil international completed his move to Arsenal on Saturday, signing a four-year contract with an option for a further season in a deal reported by British media to be worth about 75 million pounds ($101.2 million).
Guimaraes, 28, said he was excited by the prospect of beginning a new chapter at ARSENAL after speaking with sporting director Andrea Berta and manager Mikel Arteta
“I feel good, I feel amazing. I’m glad for the opportunity.
“Since the first time I spoke to (Andrea) Berta and Mikel (Arteta) I was excited. I just felt inside of me that I need a new challenge in my life and I think to be an Arsenal player is going to be an exciting challenge in my life.
“I think after playing two World Cups, I’m at the point of my life, I think I need a challenge like this. I want to win trophies, I want to make history and I think I’m in the right place to do it. I’m so excited to start.
“We have tough games to play this season so the squad is going to be very, very important and I’m hopeful we can achieve our dreams.”
Guimaraes spent four-and-a-half seasons at Newcastle after joining from Lyon in January 2022, making 195 appearances and scoring 31 goals. He captained the club to League Cup success in 2025, ending Newcastle’s long wait for domestic silverware.
His departure is another setback for Newcastle, who have also lost Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, while Eddie Howe has left the managerial position and been replaced by Matthias Jaissle.
For ARSENAL, Guimaraes offers both defensive strength and attacking creativity. Berta said the midfielder’s ability to operate as either a defensive midfielder or a box-to-box player would give Arteta greater tactical flexibility.
