Baker Mayfield finds himself in an intriguing situation with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the star quarterback plans on testing free agency after the 2026 season.

Mayfield prepares for the ninth season of his NFL career, his fourth with the Buccaneers. He has found his place as one of the best quarterbacks in the entire league, often helping Tampa Bay be in the mix of playoff contention.

However, Mayfield has seen recent contract talks break down between him and Tampa Bay. This resulted in his choice to end negotiations and focus on playing football throughout the 2026 season.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport was present at Tampa Bay’s training camp on Saturday. He went into detail about Mayfield’s contract situation with the franchise, foreshadowing a campaign of determination from the star quarterback.

“He’s upset, he’s a little pissed, he doesn’t mind telling everyone. He detailed the contract offers that the Bucs made for him. Now the Bucs look at it a different way, but Baker Mayfield made his stance, and he wants to just focus on football. So there’s two things happening here. One, yes, the Bucs were willing to make him a highly paid quarterback. They weren’t willing to give him the long-term security that Baker Mayfield wanted, only offering a two-year deal with 50 or so million dollars average per year just based on the new money,” Rapoport said.

“The other part of this is the Bucs and the entire NFL have seen what Baker Mayfield can do when he’s got something to prove, when his back is against the wall, when he knows that everybody doubts him, and that product has been really, really good. So when he goes out and says, ‘Yeah, I’m gonna have a good year,’ I believe him too because he has been in the situation before and has absolutely thrived during it.”

Baker Mayfield wants to maximize his worth as one of the top quarterbacks in the league. He hopes for the best results while he figures out his situation with the Buccaneers or tests his services elsewhere.

Mayfield had a solid campaign throughout his 17 starts in 2025. He completed 343 passes for 3,693 yards and 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He even racked up 55 rushes for 382 yards and a touchdown.

The Buccaneers will seek to improve upon their 8–9 record from the previous season. They also intend to return to the playoffs after a one-year absence and reclaim the NFC South title.

Tampa Bay looks forward to starting the 2026 season on the road, facing the Cincinnati Bengals. That matchup will commence on Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. ET.
