Tottenham are hoping to strengthen their attack by bringing in reinforcements this summer
Tottenham have still made no progress towards bringing in a new attacker. Time is running out for the Lilywhites to sign someone capable of making an immediate impact at N17 and providing a different dynamic in the final third. With other clubs focused on strengthening their attacks ahead of the upcoming season, it is important that the North Londoners also manage to get a deal over the line before the new campaign begins.
There is no denying that Spurs have done well to address most of the glaring issues within the squad. They brought in the likes of Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke, and Andy Robertson to strengthen a leaky defence. Meanwhile, they also spent significant transfer fees on both Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali to bolster the midfield under Roberto de Zerbi’s guidance. The only area left to improve is the attack, where the Lilywhites urgently need reinforcements before the transfer window closes.
Spurs need someone who can either operate on the left wing or play as a lone #9 this season. The club desperately needs to sign a player capable of sharing the goalscoring burden with Dominic Solanke. As a result, it comes as no surprise that the Lilywhites are targeting a move for Liverpool star Cody Gakpo this summer as they look to take the next step under Roberto de Zerbi.
Tottenham need to splash the cash for Cody Gakpo
It has become common knowledge that Tottenham are aiming to sign Liverpool star Cody Gakpo this summer. Recent reports suggest the Dutchman has informed the Reds of his desire to leave Anfield and is keen on joining the Lilywhites on a long-term deal. However, it is also worth noting that Liverpool will only sanction a sale for the 27-year-old if they can find a suitable replacement in the coming days and both clubs are able to agree on an appropriate transfer fee.
Reliable journalist George Sessions has now revealed how much the North Londoners would have to pay to sign Cody Gakpo in the coming weeks. Speaking on talkSPORT, Sessions said,
“I think the next incoming is Cody Gakpo. He feels the more newer name on the block. It’s not going to be an easy deal to do because he’s an experienced player and Liverpool aren’t going to let somebody go unless they’ve got an attacker coming in. So I wonder if over the next week, Liverpool really push for attacking signings to open the door for Gakpo to leave the club. It’s going to take a lot of money. You’re probably looking at £70m-£75m.”
According to George Sessions, signing Cody Gakpo will not be straightforward for Spurs this summer. The journalist does expect the Dutchman to move to N17 in the coming weeks, but believes Liverpool will only be willing to part ways with him once they secure a suitable replacement. Furthermore, Sessions claims that the Lilywhites would need to pay a substantial fee of around £75m to secure Gakpo’s signature, especially considering that the 27-year-old still has four years remaining on his current contract.
The ball is now in Spurs’ court as they look to strengthen their attack ahead of the upcoming season. From a footballing perspective, signing Cody Gakpo makes complete sense for the Lilywhites. He is versatile, capable of running in behind defences, and a clinical finisher who could share the goalscoring burden with Dominic Solanke. However, it is important to note that signing the Dutchman may not prove to be a wise financial decision, given his inconsistent form and the fluctuations in his performances.
