Patrick Mahomes unlikely to play next Saturday

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (WIBW) - The Kansas City Chiefs kick off the 2026 preseason next Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium against the Los Angeles Rams.

Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is unlikely to play while he continues to rehab last December’s knee injury.

“There’s a pretty good chance I don’t play him,” Reid told reporters on Friday at training camp. “Percentages are leaning that way. And I don’t know if I’ll play him the 2nd or the 3rd game. Percentages lean against doing that.”

Mahomes, on the other hand, is preparing to play. Even if it doesn’t seem likely that he’ll end up suiting up.

“I’m gonna prepare like I’m going to play,” Mahomes said on Saturday. “\[Andy Reid\] hasn’t told me anything, so I’ll prepare to play and get myself ready. We’ll see where we go from there, and if not, I’ll be as locked in as I am during the game.”

Reid added that the Chiefs’ other quarterbacks could use additional game reps. Justin Fields will likely get the start in Mahomes’ absence, with Garrett Nussmeier and Chris Oladokun also in line to see playing time.
