Liverpool appear to be closing in on the signing of Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo on loan this summer, with Fabrizio Romano giving a key new update.
It was Romano who was one of those to break the news of the Reds’ pursuit of the Uruguayan earlier this week, in a piece of transfer business that came from nowhere:
“EXCLUSIVE: Liverpool agree loan deal to sign Ronald Araujo from Barcelona, HERE WE GO! Verbal agreement club to club with Barça now approved by director Deco. New centre back for LFC with a surprise bomba.”
Now, writing on X on Sunday morning, Romano gave a significant new update on Araujo to Liverpool, saying his medical on Merseyside is imminent:
“Ronald Araujo, flying to Merseyside today as he will undergo medical at Liverpool. Loan deal with salary fully covered and €55m buy option clause, confirmed.”
Ronald Araujo: An ideal centre-back signing for Liverpool?
Araujo is just what Liverpool were crying out for this summer, in terms of being an experienced player who has proven himself at the highest level over an extended period.
But that’s not to say that he is past his best, with the Uruguay international still only 27 years of age, and someone who could be an asset for the Reds for five or six years, should his loan move become permanent next summer.
Granted, there is a reason why Barca are willing to part ways with their captain, who does have an error in him, but he has been lauded by writer Maxi Angelo while the move is happening currently, among others:
“There are, of course, concerns with Ronald Araujo. He’s struggled with injuries a fair bit in recent years. But if Liverpool can keep him fit and get him back to his best, he’s a world class central defender.”
Ideally. Araujo will provide great competition for Jeremy Jacquet from the off, with the duo battling to partner Virgil van Dijk at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.
The beauty of the transfer being a loan deal means that the Barca man will simply return to Spain next year if it doesn’t work out, but it will hopefully turn out to be a shrewd piece of work by the recruitment team,
