Ravens WR Ja’Kobi Lane Having A Camp ‘Not Sure I’ve Ever Seen A Rookie Have’, Long-Time Beat…

He might not be the second coming of Odell Beckham Jr., but Ravens rookie WR Ja’Kobi Lane is seriously opening eyes in training camp. The third-round pick has made a habit of hauling in impressive, low-percentage throws, to the chagrin of the cornerbacks. Already, he feels locked in for the third receiver role behind Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman.

And that is an offense that might actually use the receivers more as passing threats, to Bateman’s pleasure. But it would be Lane who quickly becomes a favorite of Lamar Jackson, at least behind Flowers, whom he helped make Baltimore’s first Pro Bowl wide receiver ever.

Jamison Hensley has been on the Baltimore beat for some time, and he has never seen anything quite like what the rookie has been doing on a regular basis. “In 27 years of covering the Ravens, I’m not sure I’ve seen a rookie have a training camp quite like wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane”, he wrote on X. “Every day, Lane produces a highlight-making catch”.

As you might already know, the Ravens have not had the greatest history of drafting and developing wide receivers. While Zay Flowers is a good player, he is far and away the best they have managed in three decades. Sure, there have been some other decent players here and there, like Torrey Smith. And, of course, Ja’Kobi Lane still has plenty to prove, regardless of his practice highlights.

Over three seasons at USC, Lane caught 99 passes for 1,363 yards and 18 touchdowns. As a junior last year, he caught 49 passes for 745 yards, though only 4 scores. He had by far a career-high 12 touchdowns in 2024. First-round pick Makai Lemon emerged as the Trojans’ top target last season.

As for the Ravens, like the Steelers, they only had one player produce at least 500 receiving yards in 2025. That was Zay Flowers, who caught 86 passes for 1,211 yards and 5 touchdowns. Even factoring in Lamar Jackson’s health issues, suffice it to say that there is room for another playmaker in the passing game like Ja’Kobi Lane.

With his 6-4, 200-pound frame, Lane is a quarterback-friendly target who knows how to use his body. Just because he can make the tough play, however, doesn’t mean he’ll make the easy one. There is a reason he fell to the third round while his teammate went in the first.

“There is consistency of making really contested, nice catches — being a really friendly target for the quarterback”, Hensley quoted HC Jesse Minter as saying of Lane. “He’s certainly starting to see a vision of maybe what he can become in the offense”.

But it will matter what he can show he is capable of consistently that will matter most. Highlights are nice, but they are only a sliver of the game. There’s a reason you can watch a 15-minute recap of a game that takes nearly three hours to complete. What happens in the rest of that time has just as much an opportunity to make a difference.
