As doubts continue to surround Cody Gakpo’s future at Liverpool this summer, Keith Wyness has made a big claim about what he expects to happen.
The 27-year-old has emerged as a leading reported target for Tottenham, with Reds supporters seemingly divided over whether they want him to stay.
As things stand, it is a stiuation that is still up in the air, but speaking to Football Insider, former Everton CEO Wyness said he believes Gakpo will remain at Liverpool:
“Spurs have had a great window; they’re one of the ones that I’d say have had to spend because they got such a scare last year, but certainly it’s been a good window.
“I don’t think Gakpo is going to leave Liverpool though. I’ve been talking to a few Liverpool fans about this, and the feeling is that while he was a bit out of favour last season, under Iraola and his style, Gakpo will fit in.
“The whole contract situation is such that with Gakpo, Liverpool hold the cards, and I don’t think he’ll end up down at Spurs. I also think Spurs don’t really need Gakpo at the moment.
“I think there are other options for them. Plus, I think the cost of Gakpo is perhaps not what Spurs need to add to the strong squad they’re putting together.”
Is keeping Cody Gakpo the right decision by Liverpool?
Gakpo may not be seen as a key starter for Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola this season, but ultimately, keeping hold of him still feels more beneficial than moving him on.
On his day, the Dutchman is a potent attacker who combines direct running with physicality, and a tally of 50 goals in 180 Reds appearances is not to be sniffed at.
Gakpo now needs to be seen as an impact substitute at Liverpool, with Bradley Barcola hopefully coming in as an upgrade, but he can still be an asset across four competitions.
If he wants to start regularly, though, it would be difficult to begrudge him a summer move to Spurs, and the Reds would need to eye up a replacement if that does happen.
