Chelsea vs Johor: Starting lineup and confirmed team news
Chelsea have confirmed their starting lineup to face Johor Darul Ta’zim, with Xabi Alonso changing his entire XI less than 24 hours after the 3-0 victory over AC Milan.
Teddy Sharman-Lowe starts in goal at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, with Mamadou Sarr, Tosin Adarabioyo and Aaron Anselmino forming the back three.
Geovany Quenda returns to the starting side on the right, while Jamie Gittens is expected to provide width from the opposite flank. Dário Essugo captains Chelsea from midfield alongside 16-year-old Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli.
The biggest selection interest comes in attack. Estêvão Willian starts behind Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap, giving Alonso an opportunity to assess two senior centre-forwards together.
Chelsea’s official website has confirmed the full starting lineup and substitutes for the Johor friendly.
Chelsea XI: Sharman-Lowe; Sarr, Tosin, Anselmino; Quenda, Nicoll-Jazuli, Essugo (c), Gittens; Estêvão; Jackson, Delap.
Substitutes: Slonina, Curd, Subuloye, Diakite, Watson, Mudryk, Walsh, Kavuma-McQueen, Satpaev.
Alonso’s wholesale rotation was expected after Chelsea played AC Milan in Jakarta on Saturday. Robert Sánchez, Marco Palestra, Josh Acheampong and Roméo Lavia all completed that game, while Cole Palmer, João Pedro, Pedro Neto and Moisés Caicedo also played significant minutes.
ReadChelsea’s match preview highlighted the likelihood of major changes because of the unusual 24-hour turnaround.
There is no indication from Chelsea’s team announcement of a fresh injury setback following the Milan win. Instead, Alonso has used the size of his touring squad to protect those who featured heavily in Indonesia.
One notable absentee from both the starting XI and bench is Mike Penders, while Mykhailo Mudryk is among the substitutes.
