Cristian Romero is reportedly open to the prospect of joining Arsenal, but Tottenham Hotspur have made their position clear: they will not entertain the idea of selling their captain to their bitter North London rivals.
Romero has emerged as a surprise name in Arsenal’s transfer plans, with reports suggesting the Argentina international would be willing to consider a move to the Emirates Stadium. The potential switch would be one of the most controversial transfers between the two clubs in recent history.
According to SunSport, a high-level source at Tottenham has insisted that the club would not consider selling a player directly to Arsenal. That stance leaves the Gunners facing a significant obstacle despite the reported openness of Romero to the move.
The 28-year-old defender is expected to leave Tottenham this summer, with his future having been the subject of considerable speculation. Arsenal’s interest has added another dramatic dimension to the situation, particularly given the intense rivalry between the clubs.
Romero has spent five years in North London and has established himself as one of Tottenham’s most important defenders. He was also appointed club captain, underlining his importance to the Spurs dressing room.
However, the prospect of his departure has increasingly gathered momentum. Tottenham have already strengthened their defence with the reported £52 million signing of Jan Paul van Hecke, a move that could provide manager Roberto De Zerbi with greater flexibility should Romero leave.
ARSENAL’s interest is understood to have been driven partly by defensive concerns, with William Saliba facing an injury issue. Romero’s experience, aggression and ability to operate at the highest level make him an attractive option for Mikel Arteta.
Yet even if Arsenal were prepared to meet Tottenham’s financial demands, negotiations would appear extremely difficult.
The rivalry between the clubs means that a direct transfer would carry enormous significance. The most famous example remains Sol Campbell’s move from Tottenham to Arsenal in 2001, when the defender joined the Gunners as a free agent.
Romero’s situation is different because Tottenham remain in control of his transfer, meaning the club can simply refuse to negotiate with Arsenal.
There are also alternative destinations for the Argentine. Atletico Madrid remain interested, while Inter Milan have been linked with a move for the defender. Those options could prove far more realistic if Tottenham decide to sanction his departure.
For now, Romero’s reported willingness to join ARSENAL has created an intriguing possibility, but Tottenham’s stance appears unequivocal.
