Princewill Umanmielen enters the 2026 season as one of the more intriguing edge defenders in the 2027 NFL Draft class. After breaking out at Ole Miss in 2025, Umanmielen transferred to LSU, looking to build on a season that produced nine sacks, 13 tackles for loss, and 13 quarterback hurries.
At 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, he has the length, athleticism, and pass-rush ability NFL teams look for. Now he has to show that he can become a more complete defender.
Overview
Umanmielen’s college career has taken him through three programs. After starting at Nebraska, where he earned Second-Team Freshman All-America honors in 2023, he transferred to Ole Miss and had his breakout season in 2025.
He played in all 15 games for the Rebels, recording 39 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, nine sacks, and 13 quarterback hurries. He also recorded sacks against Oklahoma and Tulane and finished the season with a sack against Miami in the College Football Playoff.
His production was supported by the traits that made him a highly regarded recruit coming out of Manor High School in Texas. Umanmielen has good length, a quick first step, and enough athleticism to threaten offensive tackles around the edge.
Now at LSU, the question for him is whether he can take another step and become a more complete NFL prospect.
Strengths
Umanmielen’s length is one of the first things that stands out on film. At 6-foot-4 with a long frame, he can create separation from offensive tackles and use his hands to keep blockers away from his body.
His first step is also really good. While his reported 4.70-second forty-yard dash isn’t elite, his acceleration off the snap is much more important for his position. He can get offensive tackles moving backward before they have a chance to establish their hands.
As a defensive line coach, I like the way Umanmielen combines that initial burst with his length. He doesn’t have to run completely around a blocker to win. When he gets his hands inside and maintains his leverage, he can work through the block and continue toward the quarterback.
The production from 2025 shows that this wasn’t simply athletic potential. Nine sacks and 13 tackles for loss in the SEC are legitimate production, and he consistently created pressure throughout the season.
His motor is another positive. Umanmielen continues pursuing plays even when his initial rush doesn’t work, and that effort gives him opportunities to make plays late in the down.
There are also flashes of versatility. He has primarily worked from the edge, but he has experience standing up, moving around the front, and dropping into coverage. His interception against Mississippi State showed that he has enough athletic ability to contribute away from the line of scrimmage.
Needs to Work On
The biggest area of improvement for Umanmielen is developing a deeper pass-rush plan. His first step and length can create problems for offensive tackles, but what happens when the tackle stops the initial rush? That is where Umanmielen needs to become more consistent.
He has shown a long-arm and speed-to-power approach, but his counter moves are not yet as developed. NFL tackles recover much faster than college tackles, so relying on the same initial move will become more difficult at the next level.
His hand usage will be important as well. Umanmielen has quick hands, but becoming more consistent with his ability to knock hands away, control the blocker, and transition between moves would make him much more difficult to handle.
Run defense is another area to watch. He has the size to set the edge, but there are times when he can get too far upfield or lose leverage. He needs to show that he can remain disciplined against the run while still maintaining his aggressiveness as a pass rusher.
Tackling also needs some attention. Umanmielen finds the football, but there are plays where he fails to finish cleanly. Improving that part of his game would strengthen his projection as an every-down defender.

Things to Watch in 2026
The biggest question for Umanmielen is whether he can turn his athletic traits into a more complete pass-rushing game.
Watch what happens when the first move doesn’t work. Does he have a counter? Can he transition from speed to power? Can he win with his hands instead of relying entirely on his burst? Those plays will tell us more about his NFL potential than simply counting his sacks.
Be sure to watch his run defense at LSU. Can he consistently set the edge, maintain outside leverage, and still find the football? If he can become more reliable against the run, his chances of becoming an every-down NFL defender improve significantly.
His versatility is another important part of the evaluation. LSU can move him around the front and give him opportunities to attack different matchups. Showing that he can create pressure from multiple alignments would make him more valuable to NFL defensive coordinators.
Most importantly, Umanmielen now has to prove that his breakout at Ole Miss was the beginning of his development rather than the peak of it.
