Tottenham are stepping up their chase of Liverpool star Cody Gakpo.
Tottenham Hotspur are eager to bolster their forward line before the window closes at the end of this month, after spending in excess of £230 million on their defence and midfield.
The Lilywhites have been chasing Manchester City winger Savinho for almost two months now, having failed to land him last summer. The Brazilian endured a difficult 2025/26 campaign, although that hasn’t quelled Spurs’ interest. They remain in talks with Manchester City to get a deal done for the 22-year-old.
In addition to Savinho, Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo is on Tottenham’s radar. The Netherlands international has emerged as one of the primary attacking targets, although there have been recurring question marks over whether Liverpool want to sell him this summer. As the Reds’ attacking options have become limited following Hugo Ekitike’s serious Achilles injury and the exit of Mohamed Salah on a free transfer, the hierarchy have not opened the door for the 27-year-old’s exit thus far.
Keith Wyness makes admission on Tottenham’s chase of Cody Gakpo
Recent reports suggest Gakpo has informed Liverpool’s hierarchy of his desire to leave Anfield and join Spurs. However, the Merseyside outfit would not be willing to let the Dutch forward depart without replacing him sufficiently. He also has four years left on his deal and would not come cheaply.
New Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola is reluctant to let Gakpo leave, given he is one of the more experienced forwards in his roster. Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has doubled down on such claims, stating that Tottenham will find it extremely difficult to prise the versatile forward away from Anfield.
“Spurs have had a great window; they’re one of the ones that I’d say have had to spend because they got such a scare last year, but certainly it’s been a good window,” Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider.
“I don’t think Gakpo is going to leave Liverpool though. I’ve been talking to a few Liverpool fans about this, and the feeling is that while he was a bit out of favour last season, under Iraola and his style, Gakpo will fit in.
“The whole contract situation is such that with Gakpo, Liverpool hold the cards, and I don’t think he’ll end up down at Spurs. I also think Spurs don’t really need Gakpo at the moment.
“I think there are other options for them. Plus, I think the cost of Gakpo is perhaps not what Spurs need to add to the strong squad they’re putting together.
“I expect him to be in red and playing for Liverpool. I expect him to have quite a good season under Iraola as well. So, I think it’s best for both parties, for Liverpool and Gakpo, to stay where he is.”
Tottenham step up pursuit of Gakpo
Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that Tottenham are planning to step up their pursuit of Gakpo. Talks between the clubs are expected to enter key stages, with the deal dependent on Liverpool’s intention to sell and the fee Tottenham can spend.
The player is not on the chopping block. It has been suggested that a move for the former PSV Eindhoven star would cost upwards of the £70million mark, but the Reds remain reluctant to lose him, even at that price. From Spurs’ perspective, signing Gakpo makes complete sense. The Dutchman is versatile, quick, dynamic, capable of running in behind defences, and would add goals to De Zerbi’s side.
That said, the ball is now firmly in Tottenham’s court.
