Andoni Iraola expects Jeremy Jacquet to finally play his first game for Liverpool next week as the Reds bring their pre-season to a close.

The defender was once again left out of the squad for the first friendly at Anfield this summer, with Liverpool falling to a 3-2 defeat at home to Monaco after throwing away a 2-0 lead.

Jacquet’s debut for the club has been delayed following his arrival from Rennes, having reached an agreement during the January transfer window, with the 21-year-old having arrived for pre-season training earlier than most of his new teammates before traveling for the tour of the US.

He had originally been expected to play a part in the final friendly Stateside against Leeds, but missed training ahead of the game before being left out of the squad.

Jacquet has not been seen back in training since then, having felt some discomfort following surgery on a shoulder injury which ended his final season back in France in February.

Despite missing the Reds’ latest run-out back on Merseyside, Iraola has eased fears over Jacquet’s fitness, indicating that he should be able to return for one of the final friendlies of the summer against Como next weekend (August 16).

“Jeremy Jacquet, we were in doubt whether to put him in today or not, we decided not to put him in, but he should be fine for the next on,” Iraola told LFCTV. “He’s taken a little more time than we expected.”

Jacquet’s injury has left Liverpool without many options in defense this summer, although Ronald Araujo’s impending move from Barcelona will ease some concerns ahead of the season opener against Newcastle on August 23.

The Reds though still look to be some way off reaching their desired level ahead of that trip to St James’ Park, having now lost their last two outings in similar fashion.

Giving his thoughts on the defeat to Monaco, Iraola said: “I think quite similar to the game we played against Leeds.

“I think we played a really good first half, especially the first 30 minutes, but right now, probably, we don’t have much more in terms of the level required to play like this, and then they (Monaco) were much better in the second half in the same way we were better in the first half, and they deserved to turn around the game.”

Iraola added: “I think we are, right now, we won the first two games, but the last two, we cannot sustain the level that we want for all the game. As soon as we made some changes, they start to get tired, we cannot sustain that level, so we have work to do.”
