Deion Sanders is one of the best players in the history of the NFL, and is still remembered by many for his success and achievements. After his retirement, he decided to become a head coach in college football.

After an initial stint with Jackson State, he is currently the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes college football program. Ahead of the new season, he has found support from a former teammate.

Michael Irvin defends Deion Sanders from critics

Deion has been head coach of the Buffaloes since December 2022. He is entering his fourth season in charge, and has high expectations on him to reverse the program’s recent misfortune. The team had a poor 3-9 record in the 2025 NFL season. They also had very poor performances, ranking around 112 in total offense and 121 in total defense in the whole country.

Michael Irvin recently addressed criticism that has been directed at his former Dallas Cowboys teammate Deion. He talked about it on the Ring Champs podcast. Deion has been the subject of much criticism after he visited the Cleveland Browns training camp to see his son Shedeur Sanders this offseason.

Irvin said in the podcast, “I hear coaches say, ‘Well, Deion didn’t pay his dues.’ I say, ‘What the hell? What are you talking?’ We got more coaches in the league that didn’t pay their dues because they got in on daddy’s back or, on some coaching friend’s back.” He added, “Deion absolutely paid his dues because Deion had to start off coaching little league.” The former player did not mention any specific coach’s name.

While Deion made his way to his current coaching role on his own merit, he will have to step up for next season. Many are unhappy at last season’s results. Despite the pressure, he remains unaffected.

Deion Sanders says he does not feel pressure

In his first press conference of the preseason, Deion was asked whether he was feeling pressure due to the huge expectations laid on him. He said, “I don’t feel pressure. You know how pressure is? That’s a single mama trying to make ends meet and ain’t no man in the house. And she gotta be the mother, the father, the provider, the disciplinarian and everything.”

He added, “This is football. I’m really good at this. I can play this. I can coach this. I can do this, and, you know, if you don’t believe, you don’t believe. God bless you. I need that. I like that. You put me in my comfort zone now. I’d rather be booed than clapped for, applauding. Because if you start clapping too much, I’m not gonna trust you.”

Deion Sanders will focus on preparing his team for the next season.
