The Minnesota Vikings are practicing Sunday night in front of a packed house at TCO Stadium in Eagan. Both JJ mcCarthy and Kyler Murray are on the field, in pads, as they continue one of the most publicized training camp battles in franchise history.

Before practice, head coach Kevin O’Connell talked with media about a multitude of things, including the timeline of Minnesota’s QB battle, which he says has not changed.

Of course, we wouldn’t know if it did, since he’s never revealed whatever timeline he has in mind. For now, though, the MN Vikings QB “competition” continues.

Beyond his non-answers regarding the timeline of looming QB decisions he must make over the coming days/weeks, O’Connell told reporters that Murray is farther along in his mental grasp of the Minnesota Vikings’ offensive system, at this point of camp, than what the head coach expected coming in.

Asked where Kyler Murray is in the system compared to where he thought he would be at this point, O'Connell said: "I think mentally he's definitely probably ahead of where I thought." He went on to say there are some parts of the offense that are new to everyone. https://t.co/bfCev3xHI9

Before media got an opportunity to ask questions about Kyler Murray and JJ McCarthy, Kevin O’Connell took some time to update everyone on some absences Sunday night, some of which were planned rest days — others injury-related.

Minnesota Vikings injury updates

Per KOC, (LT) Christian Darrisaw and first round draft pick (DL) Caleb Banks got the night off, as they get ready for some tough practices this week, then joint practices at TCO Performance Center against the Baltimore Ravens next week.

Meanwhile, (S) Jay Ward is in concussion protocol, though O’Connell noted that he entered protocol out of extreme caution and is expected to be cleared sooner than later.

Defensive linemen Levi Drake Rodriguez and Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins are “just a little banged up”. The head coach made a point to say that both guys are expected back on the field next week, as well.

In better news, Jordan Addison is back in pads and “pretty much full-go” Sunday.

As long as the injuries mentioned by KOC are as short-term as he suggests, the Minnesota Vikings have to feel pretty good about where they are right now, from an injury standpoint.

Of course, it’s still extremely early in camp, when you consider that their first preseason game isn’t until Saturday (vs NY Giants). There are still a few weeks before this team starts to ramp up for week 1 of the regular season against Green Bay.

While there is still plenty of time to worry about the health of key players… there’s far less time to crown a starting quarterback.
