Southampton enter talks over loan deal for Manchester City prospect

Southampton are looking to bolster their frontline this summer, with Divin Mubama expected to join on a loan deal from Manchester City.

Southampton needed a replacement for Ross Stewart this transfer window after he left to join Swansea City at the end of his contract. The Saints have found his successor for the 2026/27 season.

According to The Daily Mail, the South Coast outfit are in talks to bring Divin Mubama on loan from Manchester City. The 21-year-old spent last term at Stoke City before his stint was cut short in January through injury.

The youngster scored twice during City’s pre-season tour. He has certainly made a good case to new head coach Enzo Maresca for the future as long as he impresses in his second loan spell away from the Etihad.

Southampton look to have won the race for Mubama, who was also subject to interest from Preston North End, Middlesbrough and Derby County. It could be the Saints’ most exciting arrival this summer ahead of a campaign where expectations are at their highest.

Losing Stewart would have been a big blow ahead of the transfer window, but Mubama looks to be an adequate replacement. He showed his potential in spells during his stint at Stoke City last campaign.

Cyle Larin will be one of the top Championship strikers for the upcoming season, and Tonda Eckert will have him leading the line for the majority of the term. Damion Downs could also be given a chance, and he could excel in the second tier.

Southampton also have Cameron Archer and Ben Brereton-Diaz as options. However, the duo probably move on this summer in search of consistent first-team minutes.

The Verdict: Divin Mubama can quickly become a starter for Southampton

Larin will likely be the Saints’ starting striker for the 2026/27 season after a solid World Cup and end to the last campaign. While Mubama has the quality to be in a lot of Championship sides’ starting XIs, Eckert will ease the youngster into regular game time.

The 21-year-old, initially, will be an excellent back-up to the Canadian international and has the physicality to match the experienced frontman. When the fixtures begin piling up, the Manchester City prospect should be able to fill in and use his energy to lead the line instead.

Mubama will be eager to catch up on game time missed through injury. With Southampton in talks to bring him to St. Mary’s, the former West Ham academy graduate will get a lot more chances in front of goal with better players around him. It could be his second and last term playing in the Championship.
