Former Manchester United defender Phil Bardsley has urged his former club to prioritise Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall over Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly this summer.
United are continuing to assess options at left-back ahead of the new season, with reports linking the club with both players. However, Bardsley believes Hall would be a better fit for Michael Carrick’s side as the club prepares for a return to Champions League football.
Speaking in an interview reported by GOAL, Bardsley identified left-back as an area United need to strengthen, pointing to Luke Shaw’s injury record despite the defender impressing during pre-season, The former Premier League full-back told Metro: ‘I prefer Lewis Hall to Myles Lewis-Skelly when you look at what Manchester United need this summer.
‘Hall is better suited to playing left-back. I think if you look at Lewis-Skelly, he’s a much better player when you play him in midfield, and I don’t think United need another young player going into the middle of the park.
‘They need a proven defensive midfielder who’s got that experience to come in and own that position.Listen, he’s a quality player … but for me, if I had to pick between the two of them, it’s Lewis Hall every day of the week and twice on Sunday
Hall enjoyed a prominent role for Newcastle last season, making 47 appearances across all competitions. He joined the Magpies permanently from Chelsea in 2024 following a loan spell and has established himself as an important member of their squad.
Manchester United have reportedly maintained a long-standing interest in Hall, although negotiations could prove difficult. Newcastle are understood to be reluctant to lose another key player before the transfer deadline following significant changes to their squad this summer.
Recent reports have also suggested Manchester United have considered a move for Lewis-Skelly, with the ARSENAL academy graduate capable of operating both at left-back and in midfield. However, The Standard reported that sources believed United were not actively pursuing a move for him, while Hall remained one of the options under consideration
