Would snub Man Utd: Iraola gets close look at€50m star Liverpool are in talks to sign for him

Liverpool were beaten 3-2 by AS Monaco in their fourth and penultimate pre-season friendly of the summer, but the game offered head coach Andoni Iraola a closer look at midfield target Lamine Camara.

The Reds will not be too bothered about the results as they seek to increase their fitness, focusing more on implementing the tactical changes Iraola is bringing to the club after a season of negative football under Arne Slot.

There is a lot to be ‘unlearned’ which will take time, but the press already looks a lot better than last season.

The game did offer a chance for Iraola and Liverpool’s scouting department to get a closer look at Camara, however, who impressed.

Liverpool face competition for Camara’s signature from Manchester United

A report from Foot Mercato earlier this week stated that Liverpool are facing competition from several Premier League clubs, including Man Utd, Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace. Monaco are demanding a €50m (£43m) asking price.

The Ligue 1 outfit is already searching for his replacement, suggesting they are resigned to losing him this summer.

An earlier report from Foot Mercato, dated 19 May, claimed that Camara is “extremely keen” on a £43m move to Anfield. If true, the young midfielder would likely pick joining the Reds over the likes of United, and certainly over Palace and Nottingham Forest.

Camara stats vs Liverpool: How Senegal star played against the Reds

Blessed with a low centre of gravity at 5 ft 8, Camara is the perfect midfielder for Iraola’s explosive style of play. The 22-year-old is particularly effective in transitions – either attacking or defensive.

The Monaco No. 15 is ideal for a manager like Iraola, who likes his team to go from defence to attack in a split second.

According to Sofascore, Camara registered a 91% pass accuracy from 53 attempts, took 61 touches of the ball, won 2/2 tackles, made 2 interceptions, 7 ball recoveries and made 22 progressive carries. These stats perfectly represent why he is a player who would suit the type of football that Iraola is working tirelessly to bring to Anfield.

We need a No.6 who can cover space and snuff out danger. OOP, we’re still seeing the same issues.

Watched Lamine Camara closely today and was really impressed. I think he’s exactly what this team needs.#LFC

One of the major issues last season in Liverpool’s midfield was their lack of industry. For all his physical attributes, Ryan Gravenberch can be guilty of not doing enough out of possession. Camara would address this issue, allowing Gravenberch to be used as more of an attacking outlet.
