Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is reportedly closing in on a deal to acquire a significant minority stake in Liverpool Football Club as part of an investment consortium.
A consortium led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, has been in talks to purchase a stake in Liverpool worth roughly one-third, more than the initial 30 percent mooted.
With the club valued at over $6 billion (£4.5bn), that would place their shareholding worth upwards of around £1.4 billion.
In July, Fenway Sports Group confirmed talks, saying: “An investment consortium led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”
And now Sky Sports are reporting all parties are closing in on a deal, which could see FSG make an announcement “as soon as this week.”

Their report states: “One source indicated that an announcement was expected in the coming days, although they cautioned that it could slip into next week.”
Bezos, whose net worth is an estimated $257 billion (£192.2bn), is involved in the investor group alongside Eduardo Saverin, one of Facebook’s co-founders with a net worth estimated at $33.1 billion (£24.8bn).
If finalised, Bezos’ involvement would mark his first equity investment in a major European football club, and combine three of the wealthiest individuals as Liverpool stakeholders.

FSG, however, will remain the controlling shareholders and continue to run the club, although with significant new financial backing.
Despite the lure of increased spending power, there will, rightly, be wariness over what changes they could wish to push on the club that risks its future and identity.
US private equity firm Dynasty Equity previously paid £164 million for a minority stake in Liverpool in 2023, which was largely used to cover the club’s debt.

Bhatia is a 46-year-old British businessman, the son-in-law of billionaire Lakshmi Mittal and is leading the consortium.
The family’s investment portfolio includes a controlling stake in T20 cricket team the Rajasthan Royals and the second-largest stake in the Boston Celtics.
Ahead of the planned investment into Liverpool, Bhatia transferred his shareholding in Championship club QPR to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam to avoid any multi-club issues.
According to the Sunday Times Rich List, Lakshmi Mittal and his family were the eighth-wealthiest UK residents in 2025 with a net worth of £15.44 billion.
