Wrexham eyeing Southampton transfer raid as Man City deal nears - West Brom won't like it

Wrexham have an abundance of attacking options heading into the 2026/27 Championship season, but Phil Parkinson is seemingly looking for further reinforcements in the final third.

According to Darren Witcoop via X, Wrexham admire Southampton forward Cameron Archer this summer, with the Welsh outfit reportedly monitoring his situation.

A move for Archer now appears more likely, with the Saints edging closer to completing a deal to bring Manchester City striker Divin Mubama to the club on a season-long loan.

Archer, 24, struggled for minutes at Southampton last season under both Will Still and Tonda Eckert, with the Aston Villa academy graduate playing less than 1,000 minutes of league football across 30 appearances.

He would still score four and grab three assists in that time, but despite this, he never appeared to be a part of Eckert's plan at St Mary's beyond this summer.

A move to Rangers last January fell through, and following Southampton's capture of Lewis Dobbin for around £9 million earlier on in the window, an exit appears increasingly likely.

Now, with Southampton close to completing the loan addition of Divin Mubama from Manchester City for the season, it could further open up the exit door for Archer.

West Bromwich Albion have reportedly held a long-term interest in the Englishman, yet Wrexham could swoop in under their noses and seal a deal for the forward instead.

Why does Wrexham want to challenge West Bromwich Albion for Cameron Archer's signature?

Archer, despite his struggles last season for Southampton, has an excellent goalscoring record at Championship level.

In 70 games in the second tier, the 24-year-old has scored 22 and grabbed ten assists, and had he not been limited to 19 appearances off the bench last campaign, that record would be even more impressive.

The Jamaican enjoyed impressive loan spells in the second tier with both Preston North End and Middlesbrough previously, enticing Sheffield United to part ways with £18 million in the summer of 2023.

He'd rejoin Aston Villa the year after, before the Villains once again sold him 36 days later to Southampton for around £15 million, where he has since struggled in two years on the South Coast.

Wrexham, despite their abundance of attacking options, appear keen to add Archer to the mix, despite already boasting the likes of Kieffer Moore, Bailey Cadamarteri, Nathan Broadhead, Ryan Hardie, Davis Keillor-Dunn, and Josh Windass.

The Welsh outfit has money to spend, despite the £5 million addition of Danny Imray and £3 million capture of Ben Whiteman, and should an opportunity arise to bring Archer to the Racecourse Ground for a respectable fee, they will push West Brom all the way for his services.

Wrexham's trajectory over the past few years has been extraordinary, and the Welsh outfit are not looking to change that anytime soon.

With Imray and Whiteman having joined the club already, Parkinson's side are nearing the addition of Sunderland shot-stopper Anthony Patterson for around £8 million to become their new number one.

Add Archer to the mix, and Wrexham will have had another solid summer window, with ample Championship quality and experience reinforcing their squad all over the pitch, with a place in the top eight the minimum goal.

They will likely face the threat of West Brom in any move for Archer, but will likely be confident in luring him to North Wales over the Black Country, as Mubama's switch to St Mary's opens the door for Wrexham to swoop in for the Jamaican.
