Chelsea are reportedly pushing to sign Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi this summer, with the Spain international emerging as a potential target for new head coach Xabi Alonso.

The Blues are understood to be exploring a move for the 27-year-old as Alonso looks to strengthen his midfield ahead of the new campaign. Zubimendi’s ability to control possession, dictate the tempo and operate effectively in front of the defence makes him an attractive option for a Chelsea side looking to take another step forward.

According to reports in England and Spain, Alonso is particularly keen on bringing Zubimendi to Stamford Bridge. The Chelsea head coach is believed to have admired the midfielder for some time, having been familiar with his performances during his time in Spain and later at Real Madrid.

Zubimendi’s profile could make him a natural fit for Alonso’s tactical approach. The midfielder is comfortable receiving the ball under pressure and has the positional intelligence to dictate play from deep. His composure and passing range would also give Chelsea another option when building attacks from defence.

However, convincing Arsenal to sell one of their key midfielders could prove to be the biggest obstacle.

Zubimendi only joined the Gunners recently and remains an important part of their plans. Arsenal have yet to indicate that they are actively looking to move the midfielder on, meaning CHELSEA would likely have to make a significant financial commitment to even open the door to negotiations.

Mundo Deportivo have reported that Arsenal would demand at least €90 million (£77 million) before considering a deal. Such a figure would make Zubimendi one of Chelsea’s most expensive additions and could test the club’s willingness to invest heavily in another major transfer.

For Arsenal, the prospect of losing Zubimendi would represent a significant blow. The Spaniard was brought in to add control and balance to the midfield, and his departure would leave Mikel Arteta needing to find another player capable of filling that role.

For Chelsea, however, the attraction is obvious.

Alonso is looking to build a team capable of competing at the highest level, and adding a midfielder he trusts could be an important part of that process. Zubimendi would bring experience, technical quality and tactical discipline to a midfield that could benefit from greater control.
