Barcelona have suffered a major injury blow in the last 24 hours, with yet another one of their players having torn their ACL. The likes of Gavi and Marc Bernal have befallen this fate in the last few years, on this occasion, it is unfortunately the turn of Roony Bardghji.
Over the weekend, Bardghji was left out of Barcelona’s squad for their pre-season tournament in Udine against Udinese and Nottingham in order to protect himself ahead of an expected departure. The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi have pushed him down the pecking order in Hansi Flick’s squad, and in order for his development not to be stagnated, it was decided that he would leave – likely on loan.
However, this will no longer be the case, with the likelihood being that he stays at Barcelona until next summer. That’s because earlier reports of an ACL tear suffered in training have been confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, with the expectation being that the Sweden international will be out for at least 6-7 months.
Second ACL injury of Bardghji’s career, both times in same knee
It is awful news for Bardghji, who had been tipped for a breakout season at whichever club he was due to sign for. It is the second time in his short career that he has torn his ACL, after a similar incident took place during FC Copenhagen training in 2024 – and to make matters worse, this latest injury is in the same knee, as confirmed by Sport’s Carlos Monfort.
Bardghji’s injury does not affect Barcelona too much in terms of their transfer planning, as they only had plans to offload him without a replacement. Nevertheless, it is a difficult moment for both player and club, and they will dearly hope that there are no long-term effects when he makes his return to action in 2027.
